spell totem and chaos damage

I've been playing around with a spell totem/desecrate combo. It works pretty well, but one thing I'm wondering: do passives that give bonuses to totem damage also apply to chaos damage? I guess damage is damage, but still, something makes me wonder if damage over time works a little differently...
