Map Vaal smash damage study

I created a character that can tank map Vaal smashes without much problem and decided find out how much damage he really does.

For my setup I use Lightning Coil and Saffell's Frame:

My resists are 85 fire (lev 19 purity), 82 cold 81 lightning (missing 1 resist on gear:/)

With Coil, 40% of the physical damage you take is converted to lightning.

Vaal smash has a physical component and fire damage component.

I tested with two setups: with grace (12128 armor) and without grace (7453 armor)
I opted out of any endurance charges, flasks, immortal calls etc what might modify the result.

Equation for damage taken is as follows:

total_damage_taken =
(phys_dmg * 0.6) * (phys_dmg * 0.6) / ((phys_dmg * 0.6) + armor/12) +
phys_dmg * 0.4 * (1-0.81) +
fire_dmg * (1-0.82)

I recorded the hits

Without grace:

Then I let myself be hit multiple times with Immortal Call active (having 100% physical resistance) to determine how big is the fire component.

Lowest hit observed was 1267 which corresponds to 8447 initial fire damage
Highest hit observed was 1717 which corresponds to 11446 initial fire damage

Here is the recording:

And here is spreadsheet with the results:

And here is graphical represenatation:
red line - biggest overall hit,
green line - smallest hit,
cyan line - overall damage function given lowest fire damage recorded
blue line - overall damage function given highest fire damage recorded

WITH GRACE

WITHOUT GRACE

Both results are consistent which makes me more certain that this is the right method/approach.

TL;DR

Map Vaal smash hits from 4000 physical + 8000 fire to 7000 physical + 12000 fire, (although most likely physical hit range is closer to 4500-6500)

Does he ever crit?
Hard to tell. He didn't crit me during those 30 smashes, that's for sure. But maybe he has a low chance to crit (under 5%?) and I was just lucky...
Very Interesting vid would u mind testing this using an abyssus if you have one?
Now I want to know how strong is the smash from Vaal in Maze :D
Thank you for sharing the information!

might wanna watch the video if u want to know this information
Wouldn't using Immortal Call allow you to determine exactly how much of the damage if physical vs. fire? Take the smash with IC on, then all of the damage if fire damage. That way you can be sure the split is equal.
I dont get how your char has like over 2k life after smash... my last char with 5437 life and 650 es, both fully up, got oneshot by maze vaal smash. No dmg mods on map. 13k armour and 77 fire res.

Maybe its more fire than phys?

Edit: Yeah lighting coil OP, forgot about that.

I was thinking the same thing. Will do some more testing on that (have one more maze map that I can play with). Someone with RF and 100% fire res would have to test the physical component to be 100% accurate.

I don't have Abyssus. Wouldn't mind testing if someone provides it (I would give it back after the test of course)
