Say perhaps a game has a skill tree akin to PoE's, but its 10x if not more bigger.

Lets give some standard magics:

-Light
-Dark
-Fire
-Earth/Nature
-Lightning
-Water/Ice
-Wind

Each element has its own section the size of PoE's current tree with all its own features and nodes, each element could have many different builds. (Also add in a tree for just basic physical).

What would people think of it?

-Would you be excited for so many potentially different builds?

or

-Would you be utterly lost in what to do?

Or something else?

Spoiler
Look, man. Video games are hard, okay?
The handful of people I introduced to POE all had the same thought: The skill tree is overwhelmingly big. I would imagine that a skill tree even twice as big would be overwhelming for most people. Also, this sounds a lot like FFX :P

FFX's tree isn't really that complicated. It's mostly just stat nodes and abilities, and most paths are easily laid out for you in that.
They could make it 1000x as big and give us a node every time we killed a monster. Wouldn't that be fun!

Certainly there is a happy medium. I actually put PoE on the "too many points" side of the optimal by a little bit. Your first 60 points are interesting. After 60, it's just a matter of filling stuff in.
better just make:
-life
-resistances
-block
-useless
-useless
-useless

way more diversity.

I advocate a three-dimensional skill sphere, which rotates as you navigate it. That would provide room for more character starting points, as well as connections between "sides" of the grid in all directions. Imagine the wealth of new dynamics that would create! =^[.]^=
