Affordable Flameblast Scion/Templar with Tempest Shield/EB/MoM/AA. Balanced defence/offence

This is a build in progress. Im currently lvl80 on my scion in domination league.
I enjoy playing the char and dont have any major difficultys clearing content yet.
It feels like the child of Discharge and Incinerate :)

Pros and Cons

Pros
- Fun (at least for me)
- can be build from scratch and improved gradually
- can play reflect maps with a little care, not near as dangerous as discharge
- flameblast is very flexible in damage output; i dont have problems with fire resistent mobs
- its feels like each skill, be it active or triggered, is used to its fullest
- MF amount feels about right. i usually get about 1-2x inventorys full of rares per map.
- i guess everyone who follows the guide scene knows by now that Mind over matter with arctic armour is tanky. And that block is tanky (see the multiple incenerate builds)

Cons
- little slower killspeed than some of the top multimillion-exa builds
- can't facetank the really big hitters because no/not-constant leech
- highend endgame armor is 6l carcass. which is kinda expensive.
- can be a bit frustrating at times, when you charge up flameblast and the mob walks out of reache before you can trigger it

My stats at lvl 80:
3.8k life
2.3k mana (700+ unreserved)
70% block
75% spell block

~ 4.5k armor without flasks
~ 100 life regen per sec
~ 230 mana regen per sec
~ 60/40/75 ele resists, working on that

*didn't calculate the damage potential yet. maybe later.

I usualy play solo about 1hour a day averagely on and off. Most times i get carried away from a build when he hits level 75+.
This build seems to work less good in partys, since the positioning and luring of mobs is harder to manipulate.

WHY NO SEARING TOUCH BURNING BUILD?? ITS SO MUCH BETTER!! LIKE... DID YOU SEE KRIPPS BURNING DISCHARGER??
because i like tanking a bit with average gear. and i dont like trying to get a 5-6l searing touch. i like my chars to work from scratch and improve with gear rather then require more or less expensive gear parts.

Skill trees
While this is also doable as a Templar, the Scion needs 2 points less in the End. The Templar start area is a bit better early on for the build.

scion lvl 90 - 110 points - could change some points to get elemental adaptation

Bandits
norm - oak for life
cruel - kill all
merci - kill all

Gems
Chest:

6l BBBBBR: Flameblast + chance to ignite, ele proliferation, conc effect, pic 2x: burning damage/faster casting/fire pen/area of effect

5l BBBBB: Flameblast +chance to ignite, ele proliferation, conc effect, pic 1x: burning damage/faster casting/fire pen/area of effect

4l/lvling : Flameblast + chance to ignite + ele proliferation + inc area of effect.
-> swich AoE or prolif for conc effect vs bosses (take out prolif vs single boss, keep ve boss with mobs around)

Note: conc effect reduces the radius of proliferation. when you feel like this slows you down, put in conc only vs bosses.

Alternative for burning dislikes
Spoiler
pure blast dmg 6l BBBBRG: + faster casting, conc effect, inc area, fire pen, added chaos dmg vs ele resist

middle way BBBBB B/R: + faster casting, conc effect, chance to ignite, ele prolif, area of effect/burning damage/fire pen

Boots/glowes/helm:
4l RBBG: reduced mana - clarity - grace - arctic armour (can be 3l/1 as well)
4l RRBB: lvl 1 cwdt - inc area - lightning warp - enduring cry
4l RBBG: lightnig warp - reduced duration - culling - rarity

weapon/shield:
3l RBB: reduced mana - tempest shield - ele prolif (140% mm)
3l BBB: faster casting - AoE - flammability

a decoy totem could be nice to lure mobs into blast cycle, devouring is nice since i dont use leech (who needs leech, if everything in range is dead before you run out of flasks!)

The cwdt lightning warp might seem weird and feel even weirder when triggered, but it seems the best choice here for me. it triggers EE in a relativly big area (AoE buffs + 2 locations of damage)
Its also usefull to get out of dangerous situations while stacking flameburst before the char gets tanky enought.

If you feel to uncomfortable with LW, replace it with ice nova or whatever you deem more fitting.

Note on tempest shield links:
Later in the game, you might get a high level quality reduced mana. Then it might be beneficial to swich the cwdt setup in a 3l without inc area and put tempest shield with reduced mana, proliferation and quality added lightning damage. This would improve the shocking capabilitys by a lot.
Alternative (untested): link with life gain on hit

swich:
nothing/level spare gems to level OR rarity gear to swap to for boss kill

Getting quality
Flameblast has an awesome quality bonus. Allthough this build works fine without any quality as long as you hit a couple opponents with one blast, the quality bonus helps greatly vs single targets

Getting 20% quality on Flameblast and increased burning damage sums up to a max of 98% chance to ignite
- 30% flameblast quality
- 10% burning damage quality
- 44% chance to ignite
- 14% flammability

Without the quality it would be 58% which is fine as long as you hit multiple targets at once and dont mind recasting if it fails to ignite from time to time.

Gem-Choice explanation

The Role of active lightning warp
I chose to cull with lightning warp since it fits with the socket count and reduced duration gives it enought speed without fastercasting gem.
So my self-casted Lightning warp fills following roles:
- cull with added rarity
- movement
- manually trigger EE
- shock potential
- strategic positioning:

When clearing easy tankable content, i usually end the flameblast cast with a warp in the center of it. Its just as fast as making a movement to trigger the blast and flips EE, might shock and makes all the surrounding mobs walk into proliferation radius.

In harder content it serves as a escaping ability.

Its really satisfying to cull a running mob by warping on top of him!

The role of the cwdt triggerd lightning warp
- seems to be the most effective EE trigger since its AoE gets pretty much doubled because of the two positions it takes effect
- auto-escape when a heavy hit from big bosses gets through
!! When you are not able to tank efficiently, swap this out for ice nova, otherwise you will get teleported back to the mobs you are trying to run from!!

The role of Tempest shield:
Since we need to stand still while casting flameblast tempest shield does three things for us:
1- adds block chance (SURPRISE)
2- adds shock potential
3- triggers EE

Alternative:
Link with curse on hit and flammability or ele weakness and go dual curse
-> removes shock aspect but potentially opens up another aura slot.

Gear
Gear Notes:
- we need about 16-26 dex from gear for grace in endgame
- Id suggest to get at least 50% spellblock from gear in any given combination. the more the better, but i lvled my toon to lvl 60+ with just 50% from gear (keep in mind we also get 12% from skill tree)

Armor:
Hybrid with life/res/stats/allthegoodthings
alternative: Carcass Jack. Synergises with pretty much all aspects of the build. Hard to get the right colour sockets and 5-6l
This is not a must have item but HIGHLY recommended

The order of effectiveness would go like 5l<-5l carcass<-6l<-6l carcass

Helm/glowes:
preferably hybrid with ES
alternative helm: Rime Gaze. Offers a easier way to get a 5l with conc effect.
ES and mana is a good boost for MoM but it has no life/resis or ar/ev stats compared to a rare

Boots depending on setup:
rainbowstride
hybrid es with life/res/stats/move speed
alternative: windscream. tryed it, dualcurse felt overkill for most situations and not worth the sacrefice of a rare boot spot

Shield:
cheap and effective (also for lvling): Crest of Perandus. Block, life, resists. Pretty much all we want besides spell damage.
rare 30% block/spell damage/life/resis ES shield
rathpith globe. spell damage, spell block, life, resists. best in slot shield. saidly bit expensive.
alternative: aegis aurora. Drop EB and MoM and become one of the facetanking afk-able chars. if you desire to do so. i dont.

Amu:
Stone of Lazhwar. 50% spell block, cast speed, some mana, cheap, nuff said.
alternative: the anvil. only use with rathpith globe + rainbowstrides.
offers the highest defensive potential while reducing movement and cast speed. If you feel the need for more more defense along with high block/spell block, MoM and arctic armour and aint afraid of of spending more currency.

Rings:
res/life/mana regen/stats
1x doedres if not using windscream and want to go dual curse

weapon:
spell damage/cast speed/mana regen/fire damage/mana/resis

alternative: cybills paw.
it gives (block chance * 6/5)% spell damage and cast speed at a not too bad price.
the life on hit is less usefull than it is to incinerate builds but not a wasted stat either.

Managing AoE
The amount of AoE increases are important for two factors.
1: The radius of flameblast
2: The radius of proliferation

Since flameblast grows with its stages, faster casting increases the radius by reaching higher stages faster about as fast inc area.

Difference: Faster casting reaches faster higher damage, inc area reaches slower lower damage but higher radius at the end AND ALSO INREASES THE PROLIFERATION RADIUS.

Effects of higher Flameblast radius:
- More Proliferating targets (good!)
- higher hit chance vs moving opponents (good!)
- higher number of initially anti fire flipped EE mobs (not so good)

So when choosing your links, play around and see what serves your playstly best.
In my setup i run conc effect and faster casting in a rare 6-link thus having a -10% AoE with the 20% from skilltree.
With a lvl 19ish proliferation thats a ~27 radius which works okay for me.
With a 6l carcass id have a ~33 radius prolif which would help quite a bit.
With a 5l carcass id have that radius but less damage.

As written in the gem section, id suggest to swich conc effect with inc area of a effect earlier in 4-5l armors and use conc vs bosses only

Mana math

reserved mana:
tempest shield: 25% * 1.3 * 1.4 = 49%
grace : 60%
clarity : ~400

skill tree: 16% reduced mana reserved.
gem lvl18: 0.73 multiplier
-> 0.57 multiplier
-> (60+49)*0.57 = 56% reserved

~400 * 0.57 = 228

required mana for MoM : ~700-1000 (lets say about 850 is fine, since we block more than other MoM builds thus have more time to regenerate)
-> x total mana *0.44 - 228 = 850
-> x = 1078 / 0.44 = 2450

using some hybrid and es gear you should get about 500-1000 ES (lets say about 800)
+ about 450 base mana from leveling
+ maybe 150 mana from gear
with 48% inc mana from tree
and 42% ES from tree

-> mana formular: ( Mana * %mana increases ) + ( ES * ( %ES increases + %mana increases ))
Total mana = 600*1.48 + 800 *2 = 888 + 1600 = 2488 (YAY!)
mana regen formular: (total mana * 0.0175 + clarity) * % mana regen

(2500*0.0175 + ~22) * (140% from tree + ~100% gear) = (44.75 + 22) * 3.4 = 223.55 (lvl 20 AA is about 230 mana drain per sec)

This means
- once you hit about 2000+ mana, you could run MoM.
- once you hit about 2000+ mana with some regen from gear, you could run a ~lvl15+ AA
- once you hit about 2500+ mana with some regen from gear, you could run a ~lvl20 AA

Leveling:

"As you can see, he chose wisely to grab some life nodes early on the tree" -generic build.

I prefer lvling a character with the skills its intended to use in endgame in order to become one with the mechanics and playstyle. Feel free to use any leveling guide on this site tho.
While leveling up you should decide if you want to get MoM and EB first or buff your blocking. I found the blocking way effective since it allows for earlier use of EE and shock debuffs while giving enought defensive to survive most szenarios.
If you play hardcore you might want to choose different methods.

If you feel like EE is doing more bad than good, respec it untill later levels

Dealing with reflect
Unlike Discharge, you wont kill yourself on incautious button press, but on incautious button release. this gives you time to use a ruby flask. Along with the spellblock and arctic armour, this should prevent any reflect death.

if you dont feel like taking up a flask slot with a ruby, use lower stacked blasts to reduce the reflected damage in exchange of killspeed.

either way, its waaaaaay easier to deal with reflect as a flameblaster than as a discharger.

In reflect maps, its probably wise to take out conc effect.

I suppose leveling this build on hardcore would be safest to use a decoy totem.

Gameplay
Generelly: walk to mobs, curse, cast flameblast untill stage 2-4 depending on mob, watch them get debuffed by EE/shock , release button, watch them burn, repeat.
Maybe trigger EE manually with lightning warp if the target already burnes but wasn't auto triggerd.

The amount of your AoE/Flameblast charge is always situational.
For example:
higher charge time -> longer time but higher area covered. So takes longer to pull off but potentially hits more targets to proliferate. But also easier to miss fast moving targets.

inc AoE instead conc effect -> way easier to pull of hits and proliferates, takes longer to reach higher damage stages, way lower and damage.

Experiement with your AoE setup and find the way it feels balanced for you.

I find culling with lightning warp a bit unusual but pretty effective in this build.

Protip:
Surrounding mobs can proliferate their higher burning damage vs high elemental resistant mobs.

Updated several aspects and added a video of a lvl69 map.
You know, I'm bored with CoC guy, so I've decided to give this a try, completely different playstyle than what I'm used to. At lvl 19 so far and flameblast is a lot stronger than I anticipated.
I've actually been meaning to try out Flameblast, and this gave me a bit of insight - thanks! I'll do some theorycrafting as well.

Yeah, i usually get bored with chars really fast, but on this one its different somehow.
I think its the flexibility of flameblast damage along with the RNG of the debuff timing.
The theoretically highest damage gets done when:

-curse
-EE triggered
-shocked
-then flameblast
-EE retriggered
-shock refreshed/stacked

It usually does enought damage with just curse/EE vs normal mobs but when a lucky damage rolls its exiting.
Also sometimes the cwdt lightning warp triggers just perfectly. Like when its starts the cast right before flameblast goes off and triggers EE back on finiished cast right after blast.

Its a fun skill with several different playstyle possibilitys, also quite unusual.
It has some gamble-ish style, i think. Sometimes mobs run out of reach while charging up, sometimes its better to charge 1-2 more stages, sometimes to release earlier.

I wish you the best luck with whatever build you end up doing.

The lvl 90 skill tree shows clearly allocated:
- 2x burning damage
- 1x holy fire
- 2x damage over time
- 1x growth and decay

which adds up to
- 60% burning damage
- 36% damage over time

I just chose to take these last and focus on survivability first since flameblast by itself does pretty neat damage.
You can of course choose to take a different order if you prefer so.

You could also go for the entropy cluster, but thats too much of a strech in my opinion.
The debuff mechanics of this build grant enough base impact for a solid burn damage.
Most map bosses die in 1-2 blasts even without those burning passives allocated yet.

I might even drop the burning damage gem for fire pen. have to do some calculations before if its more beneficial.

some map content added. Id love some feedback or suggestions!
Added a Piety run and a little Kole tanking without enfeeble/flasks/blabla.

Seems like not many like my build T.T
