To GGG: Why I think your OBT intentions are detrimental to the game's future

Two things.

1. Learn to get your point across with fewer words. Much more effective, trust me.
2. Write this in PM form to Chris and try to get into Alpha. But remember, less words. :)

You made some valid points at first, but then quickly lose your footing. I'm sure GGG would welcome any help to make their game more resistant to cheaters, at least through the Alpha realm.

However inviting, even rewarding players to break the game will not be good business for them. This is a soft release, and people are expecting a mostly stable game. Not a big sandbox for hackers to break the game, no matter if its for the future well being of the game or not.

I would try to start a private dialogue with GGG about your worries and how you might help if you are so qualified, instead of writing far too long open letters that will just inflame the general community.

i see no problem with inviting game exploitation under controlled environments. ie. like a custom league where hackers are invited to create exploits, and then rewarded for it in some fashion.

in some ways it would be very similar to the DefCon hacker conference or is it BlackHat where application exploits and computer security are explored and examined, and which contributes a lot of incredibly useful information back to web and software engineers as a consequence.

given how fast and adaptable GGG have proven to be with respect to patches and patch-fixes i have full confidence that any exploits discovered can be addressed and circumvented.

You dont, but I see: Hackers hack for different purposes. Some did to help finding leaks, some do to prove/show their own skills, some do to make their own businesses from the exploits. And now, the problem is - the 'contolled environment' aka sandbox, is in no means different to the 'real' game; the exploits that work in that sandbox will also work against the 'rest' of the game... any weak point would have to be fixed (nearly) immediately (if reported!) - and any unreported real exploit would be a desastrous risk to the mechanics and economy of the game.

Can you tell us just what sort of underhanded hackery we're allowed to get up to in Closed/Open beta?

We're preparing the banhammer for people who engage in underhanded hackery in OB :P

GGG policy against hacking of the client is clear. I hereby request moderator lock.
POE is a constantly evolving game, so expect balance changes, buffs and nerfs STILL!
If you find a way to exploit the game beyond resonable means (ie: any means necessary is never, ever necessary), it is your responsibility to report it and not to garner advantage from it.

The rest of your post is essentially a giant wall of self-pats on the back, indicating that people trying to break the game are good for the game, when in reality the only reason so much time must be spent on stamping out exploits is because people look for them.

If your true intention was to find exploits "for the benefit of the game" and not "for personal gain", you would have nothing to gain by simply reporting the hole and moving on. You want to be rewarded for hacking the game, essentially.

There will ALWAYS be bugs and holes and there will ALWAYS be people looking for them in order to achieve personal gain. No policy will change that. At least this way, those people are not legitimised.
Good OP, hope GGG rep reads it.
Path of PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW
If there were fewer scumbag cheaters the developers could spend more time making the game awesome rather than patching every single conceivable angle of exploitation. So these people aren't helping anyone, they are holding the game back.
I'll leave this here for the people that didn't get OP's point

TLDR version of OP:

-OP likes to break stuff (what a meanie!)
-But OP doesn't want the game to turn into a pile of dust due to a possible rise of hacks (but but, he should be a meanie, that doesn't make sense)
-OP wants to provide his help and experience to fix the game and provide a better gaming experience (LIAR, HE IS A HACKER, HE CAN'T HELP PEOPLE)
-Since it is a time consuming activity, some rewards for his help would be welcome and would maybe interest other hackers that are more grey in their behavior (HA A REWARD, I KNEW IT, HE IS A BAD PERSON)

I know it may be shocking, but hackers can actually be good persons.
And that's actually a good thing for us, or we would be seriously fucked up.
Although, OP is more grey than white, he still has a positive mind.

You summed up my feelings for this thread pretty much.
It seems people dont think strategically at all.
The OP qouted Sun Tzu and ill also contribute with something akin to that:

To see ones own mistakes, one has to wear the mask of the enemy, wear their shoes, use their weapons, and also have the same mindset.
When one knows ones enemies, one knows oneself better then before.

Emotions has no place in strategy as its detrimental to any war effort.
War is about efficiency.
War is *not* about having feelings and letting them *take the reigns* whenever something happens.
(That said, the nature of laws in war can be a diffrent topic altogether, but i think i made my points)

To OP,

I don't have the time to read the entirety of your post.

I will try and make my point of view as simple as possible:

If ever you encounter any kind of bug, any way to cheat, or have any doubt, you should report it in the appropriate forum to help make Path of Exile better. GGG obviously listen to their players, so there is no ignoring of any issue in doing just that.

Exploiting should result in a ban, and I do trust GGG will be adamant about this.
Take care out there.
