I'm pretty sure its easier to get a 5L on a 5 rather than 6 socket item

no it isnt, the chance you get 5l on a 6 socked item is obviously higher

It depends on what you mean. If you mean it's easier to find a 5L on a 5S in the wild, then yes, it is. Simply because you'll see far more 5 socket items.

If you mean 5S items have a higher chance to roll 5Ls, then no. Basically the odds of rolling 5Ls are the same on a 5S as a 6S but the difference is on a 6S the first roll might end with 0 links, if that's the case (and about 1 in 5 times it is the case) you get a second chance to roll a 5L across the remaining 5 sockets.
