I need help with my kettle...Please.

So, last night I was making myself a nice cup of tea, when I realised, it had red bits all through it, so I opened up my kettle and saw a red cap thingy on a pipe inside of it, I took it off, coz it was disintegrating into the water when it boiled. Does anyone know what it does? Will I be ok to boil it without it, and make more drinks?
btw, this isn't a troll, im fully serious D: I can't even just boil a can of water, I don't have an inside fire and it's pouring down outside lol. And I don't have one of them old fassioned stove kettles either Last edited by Malum95 on Nov 10, 2013, 6:51:04 AM

i remember when i destroy my last kettle... water + sugar and forgot about it, fire alarm broke out, smoke everywhere and the kettle had some hard black stuff in it..

Boil a smaller amount without it and observe what happens, should be fine.
