what is the next decent PVP game

I have played two games which I would consider to be great PVP games, EVE and Age of Conan.

Although I have played POE and it is a great game for it's genre, I just can't imagine that an ARPG will even be a great PVP game. It might be good with it's arena but it will always be limited and it will never be FFA, due to the nature of it's design as an ARPG.

So are there any newer games out now that actually take PVP seriously as a major design of the game play?

Umm, i guess you don't know about free for all PvP in PoE. Arena is just the beginning of PvP, but man playing FFA in PoE was so fun and man, it is very stressful. It was tested few times like normal events on weekend, and they plan to have separated FFA league of the game (even HC one).
I think you're looking for something that doesn't exist.

MMOs can't have satisfying PVP content because the core game is always designed with PVE in mind. Even if the game is designed with PVP content at its core, by the nature of it being massively multiplayer, its netcode is terrible.

Games like UO and EVE Online offer some interesting PVP mechanics (like territory control) but the PVE content is rather boring and a necessary chore in order to have fun in PVP.

The best thing I can suggest are good multiplayer games with large player counts. Mount and Blade Warband is excellent. It can support 225~ player servers, has numerous medieval or enlightenment era multiplayer mods (cRPG lets you build a persistent RPG character to do battle with other mods have giant battles where players take the roles of commanders and order units of 10-20 players around, fighting on a large battlefield, tons of other shit), runs on junky computers, and is reasonably cheap if you find yourself disenchanted with it, it wasn't much of an investment (unlike MMOs, which are $50-60 or $15/month).

M&B looks like the kind of casual PVP fun I would enjoy, I don't know why I had not considered it before..

WTF. PoE takes PVP VERY VERY seriously. Just wait for the cutthroat league if you dont like arena combat so much. That shit is going to be awesome.

Diablo 2 was a great ARPG with great PvP aswell.
If you do get WB, do shop around the many mods.

I've been playing Chivalry Medieval Warefare these last few days, from the Mount & Bound footage listed the mode of play seems similar but within a medieval period and with a focus on individual playability. There are a few quirks that I would like to see improved over time but at this early stage of release there is little outright abuse of mechanics or prevailing class and weapon combinations. I'm impressed with the design of the combat mechanics - it is entirely possible for new players to immediately begin battling their way across the field and have their share of satisfying combat whilst developing an awarenesss of he depth of combat available. Presently I'm refining the speed and distance of lunging attacks available to the Vanguard class with their selection of two-handed weapons. Actually I would liken the experience to Dark Messiah: Might and Magic in both single and multiplayer modes (an absurdly under recognised game) but with both more fluid and advanced combat manoeuvres. I couldn't really say enough about how satisfying the combat is and just how promising this example is for future games with fantasy elements.
Warhammer Online is still the best PvP game out there

yes, it has TONS of bugs and problems

but I have never had so much fun doing group PvP

had a lot of hope for Guild Wars 2, but it just didn't make it
Metin2 its a grate PvM / PvP game the pvp its epic 1 vs 1 and guild wars.
If you want a PvP game just play a MOBA.

Bloodline champions
League of Legends
DOTA2
Smite

This will get blown into a derail thread of LoL is the best no DOTA2 is nu uh Smite is the best, so hopefully you read this before the thread succumbs to pure war.
