What is considered a "spell?

For items that have modifiers for "spell damage" does that basically mean any skill? Or does it mean only the "magical" spells like fire and lightning. In other words, are skills like cleave and split arrow considered "spells?"
Basically any skill that does not use your weapon damage is a spell.
So no, cleave, split arrow etc are not spells - their damage is based on your weapon.
A spell is any non-land card u put into play... oh wait wrong game. Where am I? oh ya what he said ^^^^. :)

this
The +AoE support gem has a tooltip that says
"

3% increased radius of area spells

The website mentions that

"
For example, Cleave could be linked to both “Added Cold Damage” and “Increased Area of Effect” for large cleaving arcs of cold damage.

In game, linking a +AoE support gem to cleave or ground slam increases the mana cost of the skill. Players in game are saying that the skill gem does indeed work with these weapon-based skills.

Is the tool-tip wrong or do +%spell modifiers on items also affect weapon-based skills?
And as it is such so also as such is it unto you
