Sword n' Board... Is it viable for the Marauder?

Hi guys,

Still very new to POE. Got my 2H hammer Marauder to lvl 34 so far and enjoying the game immensly!

So are sword and board builds viable for the marauder? Or do they tend to struggle for dmg?

Also is it best to go with sword/maces or axes?

Yes and no-ish, my first character was/is axe/shield, and did amazing all the way until act3 cruel. Then as it looked into it more, it seems like the sort of thing that will cost a lot to make viable for end game. 5l armor and good to amazing 1h weapon, and I've already got myself invested into axes :/.

Think will give a sword + shield a go next after I've got a bit further with my 2H hammer marauder... He does dish out the pain but he is somewhat squishy! Think a shield will help no end survivability wise.
