Their doing mainly personal chest space and aesthetics based Micro-transaction system. I think it could work, PoE is getting a lot of publicity right now, from people like TB and Rock paper Shotgun is really helping PoE be actually successful. Also Diablo 3 flopping in it's face (65% people dropped D3, which probably means almost anyone playing the game to enjoy has left.).
I think PoE will at least stand on it's feet. Which would be great! I think a ton of people want PoE to stand and be better then Diablo 3. |

Most F2P games are actually making money with the so called "whales" (Small percentage of people that spend the biggest percentage of the money)
And this is true even in games where some microtransactions are also useful in game and not just utility and chosmetic. There are few people that spend a lot of money on everything, and all the rest that spend very little or nothing. Being Free is done so that more people will play the game so that the "Whales" have somebody to play with. Since the guys at GGG are awesome they decided to the full "Ethical" route and not go for Whales and get small amount cash from the little boys. And doing that will maybe make some people stop and think: "I love this game and I want to help this amazing people at GGG. Even if I'm not one that usually buy chosmetic stuff I may give them some money and get some cool in-game stuff in return." |

" That is the nicest way anyone has ever called me 'fat' before. :) Yes, this is a necro thread, but the topic is pertinent and current. I can confirm that GGG have sold over 50,000 individual support packs since the scheme was introduced in April. I can also confirm there are over 50 Diamond supporters. This backs up LordArmas' point: the majority of the money isn't coming from the so-called whales, but all the fish. There's fishing in Path of Exile, after all. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. Last edited by Foreverhappychan#4626 on Jul 25, 2012, 8:14:25 PM

" I am in the same boat with this. Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.

" I put myself in the last category, I don't usually play F2P games and I don't usually spend money on cosmetic microtransaction. Still I'm planning on going gold next month. By whales I'm not pointing only on the Diamond supporter, I'm including anyone who got a Supporter pack,People who spent more than the basic 10 dollar needed to play this closed beta. If 50'000 bought access 50 Diamonds Supporter are the 0.1%, by small percentage I'm talking about 10-15%. And do not count only the 50'000 people that bought an access, but count all the people that have access to the beta and play for free (right now with lottery, friends key, etc..) then everyone who plays and won't spend on microtransactions. Add to this that right know the microtransactions are very limited, when you get your support pack and get 4/5 new stash tab there is not really a point to spend anymore. As long as GGG will keep adding new cool stuff to buy, people will buy them. Right know if you got your pack yesterday or 3 months ago it doesn't really make a difference. If you are a supporter when microtransactions are active you probably would have not spent "only your supporter pack money" but probably spent those same money every x weeks on new stuff. You can see that very easily you can come up with a small number (10-15%) of people playing that probably will give GGG 80% or more of the total revenue. |
