Is this game completely free?

I agree, I absolutely hate f2p games restrict what has come to be expected as main features of a game (eg. you can't pick up uniques, you can't go on quests).

Path of Exile nearly HAS to be f2p to have a shot at being ultra successful. The reality is that they don't have anywhere near enough money to compete with D3 that is coming out at nearly the same time. They are in major trouble if their release window is Christmas of 2011. The thing that saves them is their MMO like capacity and f2p model. They would be quickly forgotten as a niche game if they released normally.

In fact, I really have no idea how they got this far as an indie game. But we'll see.
There's more people in American playing Farmville than there is actual real farmers!

There are more people playing as orcs in World of Warcraft than there are orcs in the real world.

There are more Trolls in the real world, then there are in Dungeons & Dragons
They should do fine as long as they do it like League of Legends.

And don't forget to add a (more expensive) package which is so feature-complete that you would not have the need to pay for anything more for a loong time.

And don't forget exclusives and special limited-time-offers. (Which are mostly for prestige and cosmetic purposes.) XD
I recently read in PCGamer that only a small percentage of players in F2P games need to make purchases for a game in this model to be profitable, hands off to GGG for making what looks to be an great game.
Cosmetics and other things, Maplestory is a good example of how a F2P game makes tons of money with cosmetics and some potions.
