Improve game icon

Just wanted to share my thoughts on this.
Foremost, when it comes to icon design best practices, the inclusion of text is both unnecessary and discouraged. In fact the whole point of an icon is to create an instant visual link between our memory and an application - including text forces us to switch between modes of image vs. text recognition and may even inhibit rapid identification. Low legibility further compounds the issue. Furthermore the player has no need to read the title of the game in the icon since they already know the title having installed it. Given that PoE's logo is actually text-based, the best solution is probably to create an icon derived not from the brand logo but rather from some visual element central to the game itself. The orbs immediately spring to mind. As an icon the Regal Orb is both eye-catching and leaves a lasting impression, it's also instantly recognizable. I'm not suggesting that this become the game icon, only that it serves as an excellent example of what a PoE icon could look like; effectively capitalizing on the unique and salient style of the game while forming a strong lasting link in the player's mind. |
