My love/hate relationship with the PoE passive tree

We all know about the PoE passive skill tree. You either love it or you hate it. But . . .

I am in two minds about it. On one hand I really like the principle behind it. Have one large tree that all the different classes access. But on the other hand I think it's not very well laid out. It feels needlessly complex. There is no way to easily navigate the tree and there is a ton of duplicate skills there. Just so each side of the tree can have access to the core passives of +accuracy, +damage and +evasion/defence.

So in short I would give my feedback (in my opinion of cause) to the passive skill tree as this.

The Good

- The principle behind it where everyone access the same passive tree
- Different starting points for each class. I like it in the tree as it is now. But if you change the tree you might not need this.
- It's a rather unique idea. Something different is always good.

The Bad

- All the duplicate skills. I understand why they exist. So all classes can get the basics as I mentioned above. But to me it just feels like padding out the tree with no real benefit to the player.
- Hard to navigate the tree easily. A player new to the game would easily get lost in this massive tree and have no where where to start.
- Does not promote experimentation. With something this large everyone I know just went "I don't know what I should be taking so time to google/bing or your favourite search engine) up the best skill tree setups for my class. Simply because there's no real way to try out a setup without being locked into it (except for a limited number of respec points)
- Not all of the passives are that interesting. For the most part you have two choices. Take a specifically useful skill to you and don't move far through the tree. Or take a + intel/dex/str skill to move a bit further through the tree. It's a nice concept but it does feel a little like well strange. +X stat could be very powerful. But it's not very attractive. To most players they'd like some more flashy passive over a bland +X stats one.

Here I did write up a little idea on a possible change for the passive skill tree. And I'll quote it in this topic.

I thought of a way to differentiate the classes without having too much developer work to be done. As it stands you have 6 classes based on str/dex/intel. And that works. But I'd like to take this and apply it more to the pretty large skill tree. And do it by changing the number of skill points each class needs to use a different type of skill. And here by skill I mean the passive skills on the skill tree. I am not talking about gem skills at all here.

The Marauder
Strength skills take 1 skill point to use
Dexterity skills take 2 skill points to use
Intelligence skills take 2 skill points to use

The Ranger
Strength skills take 2 skill points to use
Dexterity skills take 1 skill point to use
Intelligence skills take 2 skill points to use

The Witch
Strength skills take 2 skill points to use
Dexterity skills take 2 skill points to use
Intelligence skills take 1 skill point to use

The Duelist
Strength skills take 1 skill point to use
Dexterity skills take 1 skill point to use
Intelligence skills take 3 skill points to use

The Templar
Strength skills take 1 skill point to use
Dexterity skills take 3 skill points to use
Intelligence skills take 1 skill point to use

The Shadow
Strength skills take 3 skill points to use
Dexterity skills take 1 skill point to use
Intelligence skills take 1 skill point to use

Sure you could change these numbers for balance but you get my idea. In this vain every class could use every passive skill eventually but it's easier to use those of your same type. This would make the initial character choice more notable even into the end game. You could also edit the number of skill points you get per level up or something to compensate. I don't know. it's just an idea. What do you all think.

I do really like the principles behind the current passive skill tree. Like a lot actually. But it's implementation into the game to me I dunno just does not feel right. It's not as user friendly as I think it could be. There are many ways this skill tree could be changed. Or not changed at all depending on what the developers of this game want. But the developers did ask for our feedback and this is how I feel on the passive skill tree.
