Lightning Strike supports - Lightning Penetration or Melee Physical Damage?

Hey guys,
I've been trying to figure out which of these two gems would be better for suppotring lightning strike - quality lightning penetration or quality melee physical? I'm planning on using Lightning Strike as a large AoE sort of attack, whereas my Heavy Strike will serve as my physical single target life steal attack. Lightning Pen will ultimately add to my lightning damage by a solid percentage and allow me to penetrate resistance. melee incfreased both the physical (single target) aspect of lightning strike, but, in turn, ALSO increases the lightning portion substantially. Does anybody have experience using both to tell me which has been more effective for them? | |

what other support are you using? how many links in your gear do you have for LS?
personally I use LS + Life Leech + Weapon Elemental Damage + Added Fire Damage + LMP It works extremely well and Added Fire Damage actually outdamages Melee Physical Damage and synergyses well with the Lava Lash passive node (+30% Fire Damage with Weapons). Also, what curse are you using? If you use Elemental Weakness there is imo no point using Lightning Penetration. penetration is much better, melee physical damage only applies to the melee hit whereas penetration also applies to the projectiles from LS

You sure about it only applying to projectiles? Because the lightning damage on the ability drastically increases when slotted with a melee physical gem, which makes sense given that LS's damage is derived from your physical attack power.
And my other two supports are LMP and Weapon Elemental Damage. I am going for a 4L. Also I don't use pierce because my LS is 15 quality and already pierces about half the time. Also, I use Conductivity on large groups for damage/ shock chance, and Warlords Mark when I need to leech life back to stay alive. LS doesn't do enough physical for it to warrant life leech, IMO. " The Life Leech gem work with any kind of damage, not just physical. Also I use Blood Magic so I need Life Leech so that I dont kill myself spamming a 51 mana cost spell. ign: PhrozenFlame

Fair enough. Still don't think its super necessary for me. I'm also blood magic, but I'm level 72 and happen to regenerate 150 HP/second, so the costs are not actually important to me. I can maybe see it as a 5th slot if I ever decide to get a 5L armor.

" Melee physical damage only applies to the melee hit of LS, it will improve your tooltip dps but the projectiles wont do more damage. Penetration affects the melee hit and the projectiles too, thats why its better. But since you have a 4link the best supports for it would be LS-Weapon ele-Faster Attacks-LMP life leech gem leeches any kind of damage, it even works with spells, it doesn't matter if its physical or ele. Thanks for all the helpful info, all. I will likely use LMP, Weapon Ele, and faster attacks.
I may include Lightning Penetration when I get a 5L armor. | |

Question is...is it really useful to add Lightning Penetration if you already double curse to lower Lightning resist...

IIRC, mobs can have negative resists so it would improve your dps.
