The random invite doesn't give a key, it makes your status directly beta, AND sends a PM and a email, so people gone for a year do actually see an email and come and play.
Keys from friends or contests are passed directly, but I don't think many get "wasted". What kind of game would have you march through and whack everything, its a game not equipment testing.
