[3.5] Winter Orb | Occultist | Life | Uber Elder



Introduction

Speed, defensive, good damage, margin for error.

Key words that I wanted to build around Winter Orb this league. This build has basically Elementalist Inpulsa level of clear without the ridiculous prices. It has 5-6k life plus phase acro, it has 3 curses including temp chains, it doesn't make you sit there and cast-on-channel little spears while getting smacked to death by shaper's balls.

I went life instead of energy shield for a few reasons, including because early in the league its hard to get the gear, and that much of the gear I was looking at has life built in. The synergy was apparent to me.

Will do my best to respond to anyone that has any questions. This guide is WIP and I'll be updating over the next couple days.

Pro's & Con's in general

+ Winter Orb is extremely fast at mapping
+ Occultist has great defensive layers in general mapping, free temp chains with the amulet (which also boosts the length of flasks), and phase acro, providing a very smooth mapping experience
+ More single target than Elementalist version (due to malediction & easy power charge access)
+ Can be budget built into fairly smoothly early league
+ Has great, consistent AOE from Carcass Jack, Power Charges (Occultist), and passive tree
+ Most core gear is pretty cheap (relatively) most would be 1ex for Solstice Vigil & 5ex for a 6 link Carcass Jack (prices as of Dec 26, 2018)


- Early on without gear the single target feels weak
- Single target can still feel weak with mid-tier gear on (some) bosses with no mechanics, but for something like Uber Elder it feels better since you are attacking while dodging
- Can't do Elemental Reflect map mod



Gems

6 Link - Chest
In order of importance, links should be:

Winter Orb - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Faster Casting - Added Cold Damage - Hypothermia - Controlled Destruction
When you are leveling use Lesser Projectiles until you get Greater.

Don't use Winter Orb without Lesser Projectiles, and preferably a 4 link (it will feel bad otherwise).

Bonechill - Frost Bomb - Cold Snap - Hypothermia
Bonechill gives us great increased damage when enemies are chilled - therefore linking it with Cold Snap and Frost Bomb gives us two avenues. I tried Vortex and Arctic Breath but liked Cold Snap more. We don't use Vaal Cold snap simply because we run out of hotkeys if we have something with Focus.

Cast When Damage Taken - Immortal Call - Increased Duration - Vaal Righteous Fire
Do NOT socket Righteous Fire until it is higher level than Immortal Call or it will activate and kill you (basically). We are only using Vaal Righteous Fire for the extra spell damage modifier. If needed, pop your health flask after using Vaal Righteous Fire to cover the damage.

Soltice Vigil gives you free temporal chains, bonus, given that as an Occultist we get an extra free curse. We also get some map damage with the extra curse on kill (see Malediction Ascendancy). We have a respectable amount of curse effect and aoe, so this really helps coupled with chill to keep you alive.

Solstice also more importantly gives you Shaper's Presence, which is like a temporal chains on yourself but without the downsides of walking slow. Simply put, picture doubling all buff durations on yourself including Winter Orb stacks, Flask duration, charges, etc. If you've ever played Winter Orb, you know that pain trying to keep those stacks up during mapping - it is hard even with all the passive tree duration, and annoying. Most people resort to using increased duration support gem to keep it going longer (not bad but doesn't feel great), or faster casting to cast it quicker (not bad as well, I still use this even with Solstice). This buff/item is a major quality of life bonus that I would take over anything. This doesn't really help for bosses, but it is such a difference I would even consider using this item for this one buff alone.


Carcass has everything we need - #1 AOE, #2 Life, and some bonus damage and resistances. Aoe is great for winter orb to make the orbs shotgun. See the quick and dirty drawing, note there probably is more overlap than I illustrated here:



Basically the more AOE you get the more overlap there will be (especially given the hitbox of the target). More projectiles seems to add them in closer, but eventually with dying sun (or say with Beltimber Blade which I tried earlier in the league) it starts lobbing them closer to you which are hitting nothing.



Wand/Shield offhand seems like the best way to go. You get a good mix of damage and defense in the extra life on shield. I mentioned Beltimber Blade before, you could use 2 of those, drop GMP on the 6 link Winter Orb and replace it with like Cold Pen/Slower Projectiles. This would give more damage than my setup but lose life, and (to me) have less room to scale with GG weapon gear.

Furthermore, rare weapons will allow you to craft on the double damage while focused mod. Doesn't show up on PoB but you'll notice it for sure on bosses.


Warlord mark lets you leech mana and life and is one of the core components of sustain. Try to get life & or other resists as supplementary stats on the ring


Aspect of the Spider is a great dps boost, 5% increased damage taken by the enemy for each stack. This boost is better than any of the other auras or heralds.


This urn is great, gives us some well needed crit but more importantly we get 10% increased damage taken to the enemy when ignited during the flask effect. So I slap on some added fire damage to spells somewhere on jewels and ignite for peanuts base damage. Ignite duration is always the same, so you only need one small source of damage to trigger this condition.


GG flask, has AOE which we need and 2 extra projectiles


These boots are an easy way to get an extra curse in (I like Frostbite for the chance to freeze and -resists, but you could also go Enfeeble)


Any rare helm works, craft onto any base that has the Winter Orb enchant. I like the 2 extra stages to give extra time on duration and faster attack speed. Delve craft to get that juice -9% resist too!

Playstyle

Wind up 10/12 stacks, then dive in with quicksilver flask and phase run. I try to restack up around 4-6 stacks back up to 10/12. Flame dash to dodge stuff, ledges, or when flasks are out.


Pantheon

Major God
I like Soul of Solaris for the physical damage and crit damage reductions.

I would like to know as well. Have never played an Occultist so no idea what to pick.
I went Profane Bloom, Malediction then Forbidden Power..currently running Uber to get Void Beacon and its working out pretty good.

Overall satisfied with the build.

My biggest complaint and it's a minor one at that but I wish I could fit an enlighten in somewhere to have a bit more extra mana for casting. Only having 100 isn't...bad but Could do with a bit more but that'll come with levels.

Sorry I'm new this league - I have a similar build but I can't figure out why when I setup Temp Chains + Blasphemy that nothing increases in duration? I must be missing something, but I can't figure out why that isn't working.
mikeduffy13, when you use blasphemy linked to a curse, it becomes an aura thereby removing any use for duration on it. just have the curse aura active and you're set.
