Niko and Sockets

I've delved down 60+ depth and monster level is 70+. Niko is level 4. I can't seem to find more recipes and I am missing 5 & 6 sockets and probably some more color ones as well. I'm level 83....It's not exactly easy to find Sulphite. Is there something wrong or am I supposed to hit level 90 before I can even color my chest piece correctly?

Since most everyone else is level 6 I feel like there is a problem and I have seen the "crafting stones" in the mine but they never light up to give me anything.
