Essence Monster with Explodes mod, dropped no loot

Not sure if this is an bug or feature.

I was playing Whakawairua Tuahu and came across a Essence monster with the mod Explodes. When I released the mob it almost instantly exploded itself and thus it didn't drop any loot.

Not worried about losing those 2 essences, however this could potentially happen to the higher tier essences as well.
And since there isn't a way to see the monsters mods before releasing it, it made me think that this might be an bug.
