The era of independent creators ruling youtube is about to be over
For those who are not aware, there is a battle that has been going on for some time now between PewDiePie and T-Series for #1 most subscribed channel on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSQIX_G3TjU At the current rate, T-Series will pass Pewdiepie in the next day or 2. Since the beginning of youtube in 2006, it has always been ruled by independent creators. Pewdiepie took the #1 spot somewhere towards the end of 2013, and kept it ever since. T-Series is an Indian music record company that blew up in subscribers recently. They are basically the Indian VEVO of youtube, and with the growth of the internet and India having 1.3 Billion citizens, It was bound to happen at some point. Youtube has already gone corporate over the last couple of years, but Pewdiepie was always there at the top, representing the era of independent creators ruling Youtube. I spent all of my teenage years in this era watching tons of youtube and enjoying it. Kinda sad to see it officially end, but it was inevitable. It wasn't inevitable, it was a conscious business decision. YouTube was and to a lesser degree still is a platform for independent content creators, but its leadership at Google would clearly prefer it become part of corporate establishment media a la cable.
This decision of YouTube's doesn't mean the end of independent content creation. If YouTube fully kowtows to establishment media, as seems increasingly total, it will no longer be a viable platform for independent content, that's okay in a free market. The demand for independent content is still there, so other websites will pick up the slack. The major concern is anti-free-market suppression of alternative platforms, which would require either government intervention to directly contribute to their persecution or, given a coordinated multi-industry collaboration (e.g. coordination with domain registrars and/or payment processors), government non-intervention in enforcement of existing anti-trust law. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. To be fair, pewdiepie is a complete asshole.
So although I don't really support corporatism, I don't really consider him no longer holding onto his throne to be much of a loss for society. |
