My fave vet has left the area and I'm sick and tired

Yeah, I feel you, we are on our 4th vet but our 18 rats demand a lot. Fortunately we have a combo of two separate vets with different talents now but if the main one would go away that would be damn tough. Obviously they are rodent specialists but one has mastered rats especially and the second one is also good with groundhog squirells, we have two of them roaming around as well but they never get sick.
18 rats! GEEZ. PrinceoftheDawn would envy you! I'll have to show him this post when he gets home.

We just have one grumpy man. We just moved him to a bigger cage and he's a little stressed out but we're hoping he will adjust. We can't pick him up so when we moved him, he crawled into a shoebox that we let him play with and used that to ferry him into the new cage.

There's two more rats that I'm trying to talk the Partner in Crime out of going to adopt. They are at the same place we got grumpy man from so it's a little disheartening because the staff there when we adopted him knew literally nothing about rats.

Every rat will be grumpy when alone, rats are pack animals which is why they never do well alone, have at least two. It literally cuts down their life span when they live solo.

EDIT: worth mentioning that all of our rats are rescue rats, some came badly damaged, some mentally unstable but all are fine now. Pet stores are almost the worst but one of ours came from a dude that tried to feed it to a snake, missing half of hind leg which we are now slowly healing. Called it Long John Silver and for some reason Silver rarely wants to leave my hand, very tricky to type when Silver is out.

Yes, it's true rats don't do well alone. We adopted this one from the humane society after someone dumped him there directly after Hurricane Irma. We do not know if he was alone when his previous owners had him and can only guess so. We are also sure he was abused. He will not tolerate being handled and will bite, quite badly. I've gotten mangled a couple of times by him. We don't know if he will take to another rat so we are hesitant to try giving him a companion. I don't like him being alone but I also don't want to introduce him to a buddy, only to find even after getting on that he's killed his cage mate. :\

He is the only rat that I've owned that hasn't had a cage mate. I've always adopted minimum of two at a time until this one.

Edit: I am also familiar with introducing rats to each other and easing them together before actually committing them to living together full time so I do know better than to throw them in a cage together right away.

Do you know the techniques of taming scared rodents? The one including a bath tub, old clothes, some free time and shit and piss all over you while the rat resides inside your zipped up hoody? We did that with two rats that kept biting us hard, today one of them sometimes does light warning bites but very rarely, the other one climbs on my shoulder all the time and attempts to clean my ears and my entire face. We also have one rat who came to us so fucked up that he was basically a giant blood clot a week before, he has severe trauma and barely knows how to behave around other rats but it helped as well - he still is afraid of people but not to a point of screaming bloody hell and trying to wrestle away upon slightest touch.

After the way he almost sent me to the hospital with my thumb and another occasion the palm of my hand, no thanks. The partner in crime will often set up fences and lay there with a book but he usually ends up getting bitten in random places (foot, arm, etc.) and has come away bleeding more often than not. I have a scar where he bit me and it took months to totally heal because it was a deep puncture.

I can't afford to keep getting bitten deeply by him. My job is very hands on and I'm very lucky I didn't end up out of work a few days over it both times. I can't imagine getting bitten on my torso! PIC had that done to him when he didn't realise his shirt rode up as he was laying there.
Hi.

I had one (rescue) that put a hole nearly all the way through my hand! Thought I would have to go to get stitches but he missed a vein by a few millimeters.

He wasn't trying to bite me btw. It was a rat he was going for and like a stupid asshole I put my hand there. The guy never bit any humans or even cats. Just other rats. Not sure what was going on in his mind.

Some rats are just assholes I guess. Haha.

I could just be overthinking it and he'd welcome a buddy but I'd hate to try and another rat get hurt or worse. :(

Interesting case indeed. Over the last year about a 100 rats have went through our place as temporary guests and none of them has ever bitten us too much. But some of them did bite their new owners eventually, no idea how that works. My woman says that I am some sort of rat whisperer because I can put most of them to sleep within 10 minutes but I also have some unorthodox strategies. When our bity rat Dalek used to bite us I shoved my finger into her mouth saying "bon apetit madam" and she was so stunned that she refused to bite me anymore, from time to time she attempts but I just say "oh you're hungry, have some more of finger" and she stops instantly. But damn it was hilarious to chase her and try to shove that finger into her mouth, she learned that this is what happens when she bites haha

Well fuck. All of out rats have myco confirmed, symptomless so far but still, 3 weeks of antibiotic therapy to cripple the myco as much as possible. 18 rats on medication, thank heavens the missus works from home for some time now but what an ordeal that is.

But that is terrible! I they taking 2 kinds? We had to put ours on both doxycycline and the other stuff (like amoxcillin). That is an ordeal for sure. :( Sorry to hear it.
