My fave vet has left the area and I'm sick and tired

This is the 4th one we have "lost". One turned into, get this!, a missionary and went to Africa, one left to teach full time at a prestigious animal hospital, one died, and yet another got married and moved away to practice there.

These were not just "good" doctors, but visionaries and in some cases, people that were willing to learn about subjects they did not specialize in school with a thirst for knowledge of new treatments, etc.

We used to have rats for pets so you end up seeing a lot more vets, in some cases teaching them about treatments, etc. I had a really good relationship with at least 2 of these (the wife was premed and I used to study with her and I picked up a lot).

I feel sad and disappointed again. :(

Me and the wife were thinking of adopting another cat (young) to keep Marlin busy since we are both working a lot but this gives me pause.

Yeah, I feel you, we are on our 4th vet but our 18 rats demand a lot. Fortunately we have a combo of two separate vets with different talents now but if the main one would go away that would be damn tough. Obviously they are rodent specialists but one has mastered rats especially and the second one is also good with groundhog squirells, we have two of them roaming around as well but they never get sick.

I quit this game every few months and so should you to continue playing it in the future.

also what do you do with the rats?
I dont see any any key!
JohnGrammaticus, it's nice to see you again. I saw a pic of one of your squirrels at the other forum. Yeah, in our rat heyday, we had at the most 8 (all boys), very high health maintenance. In our area, there is a HUGE issue with myco so there is always that. The vet we just lost was our cat's doctor now too. He did not specialize in rodents but pestered a specialist in another city to learn. He was VERY good and even tried an experimental drug treatment on one of them (Brian) which worked for awhile.

We had 2 or 3 doctors as well. I have lost track of one since he was in another city and since we don't have rats is no longer required. He knew his "exotic" animals though! Specialized in reptiles too.

I had one very bad experience with a bird specialist. Did not know how to take blood properly and it was painful for the little guy. :(

They were pets but we don't keep them anymore. Just the 1 cat now. We just don't like the way they don't live a long time. And the health issues are another factor for sure.

Despite popular myth, cats are not rat killers. Not these rats (some are HUGE). They aren't scared of cats either. Maybe more other way around. LOL

I think certain dogs are dangerous to them but we don't have a dog and I dislike terriers.

I have one of these

they are the bane of rodents lol

She caught and brought me a grown rabbit the other day

a couple years back she defeated a muskrat

funny how such a cute little dog revels is soaking its white coat in blood lol

Kolyaboo, 90% of rats have myco but apparently most of them have no visible symptoms and don't get bothered. My woman became sort of a known rat expert in my country so she is in the know and well, she is the one who gathered the amount we have haha. But that is okay, she is mostly responsible for them, all I do is build them houses, toys and play with them. Trust me, that massive avalanche of 18 rats spilling all over you when you open the cage is truly something, each one of them is like "omg dude where have you been, we been wondering all of us, you been gone all night dude" hahah. I had to move my workbench to the bedroom here they can't go, entire salon has been designed so that they can free roam but they always find a way to jump higher and get some place new. I've been inning that battle for a month now but I am in the process of building some kitchen furniture and that is a very tactical build indeed.

Good luck with your building! Have any pics?

That is something (there are a few things) I miss about rats. The "mugging" as we used to call it; when they all greet you. Honestly too, there is no better smell than a clean rat! Like methyl anthranilate and musk with something else. Awesome.

K1rage, what is her name? Good friend of mine has one. I like all animals but we are not really suited to dog living.

Kolyaboo, I am 1/3rd through, their fortress is almost ready but the plexiglass gates are in the making, placeholder prototypes out of reclaimed MDF are installed for now. This is because the rats don't fully like the groundhogs and groundhogs ignore them and just try to check out their place so one side of the fortress belongs to rats and the other one to groundhogs, the gates are up whenever one group or another roams around.
All of it is designed as nice furniture and the TV and audio system stands on top of it, I'll send you pictures once at least one gate will look nice. This is the first tie I work with nice and expensive materials for furniture, so far everything I made was from reclaimed stuff so yeah, I take my time and cutting large panels of acrylic is tough to do precisely. Inside of the fortress there are four cages, three of them are connected as a one expandable unit for the rats, my custom job as well.

18 rats! GEEZ. PrinceoftheDawn would envy you! I'll have to show him this post when he gets home.

We just have one grumpy man. We just moved him to a bigger cage and he's a little stressed out but we're hoping he will adjust. We can't pick him up so when we moved him, he crawled into a shoebox that we let him play with and used that to ferry him into the new cage.

There's two more rats that I'm trying to talk the Partner in Crime out of going to adopt. They are at the same place we got grumpy man from so it's a little disheartening because the staff there when we adopted him knew literally nothing about rats.
