Chieftain question

I recently got Tukohama, war's herald in my ascendancy tree, but my totems don't seem to be taunting anything, i tested it on brutus/shav in act 6 but it didn't seem to taunt, or did i just get REALLY unlucky and the 20% never procced?
OR does the taunt not work with normal attacks? (facebreaker melee build btw)
cause it says Skills used by totems, and slamming stuff into the ground isn't really a skill...i saw youtube videos of people walking around while the boss is slamming their totems
