Recent Serverside Performance Improvements

Last week, we deployed two sets of performance optimisations to our servers with the goal of minimising serverside processing spikes which could occur when large amounts of items drop simultaneously.

Our game instance servers currently run hundreds of Path of Exile instances on each physical CPU core. These instances process incoming actions from players, advance the monster AI, generate items, etc. While each of these ticks usually finishes almost instantly, it's possible for them to go over the frame budget in extreme circumstances. When this happens, that instance is stalled, running slower on the server than the clients are expecting. Under lockstep mode, this results in a data-starvation stall. This looks the same as when there's actual internet latency, because in both cases, no data is arriving to your client.

Last week's fixes massively sped up the slow cases that were occurring in the most extreme situations. This has had a decent impact on server performance and will noticeably improve your experience playing in maps that have really intense combat going on.
