Purpose of new melee support?

You can hit 3 enemies with single target attacks. The hell difference is that compared to melee splash when you can hit everything around you?

Why even bother making a bunch of crap that functions nearly the same?

Lesser mana multiplier, lesser damage penalty.
Melee Splash does one attack that hits in an area. The new support makes a single attack also attack nearby enemies. So you get the attack effect multiple times while on splash you only get it once. Good example is Molten Strike, which creates one spray of orbs per attack. Skills like Static Strike, Frost Blades and Wild Strike should equally benefit from this.

So, will the 2nd and the 3d attack be effected by melee splash?
Do not compare it to melee splash. Compare it to multistrike

It does the same thing: 3 hits to nearby targets. It is nothing new or noteworthy

Sure it can be combined with multistrike to deal 9 instances of something but at what cost. Frost blades do not really need more AOE, wildstrike mostly hits thin air and moltenstrike.. wouldnt classic 40%more multiplier be simply better?

Oh and one note: this gem is 100% pointless vs single enemies while multistrike still works

It is advertised as single target skills help but to be honest this wont change a damn thing.

Sunder in a 0 link still wipes thw floor with Double Strike + new gem and it still can use extra link.

Issues solved: 0
Combines the uses of melee splash and multistrike to solve nothing? In the end it seems clear speed doesn't improve much and single target suffers for it.

Well I guess melee is fucked if this is the best they can think of.

Meanwhile necromancers get more skills than they can use.

At least, they added interesting support gems, not just "more damage" shit like it was in previous patch.
I have little hope that those gems will be useful... Though i pray i'm wrong.

There is no knowledge
That is not power
If further adjustments with damage penalty/slashed "moar" multipliers for damage regarding current gems will get implemented in 3.1, maybe this has a chance to be worthwhile...
PSS: Our almighty TencentGGG overlords are very scrupulous regarding criticizing their abilities to take proper decisions and consider everything "needlessly harsh and condescending"...

Good to know "free speech" doesn't apply in any form or manner on the forums these days...

This is a good question... Concentrated Effect + Melee Splash + Ancestral Call could do some ridiculous single target damage.

it wont do any single target damage: when facing one enemy you will hit just once thus wasting both Ancestral Stuff and Melee Splash

if you talk about pack clear - sunder does all that without wasting 2 extra links

this does NOTHING to solve 'single target melee attacks are pointless' problem
