George is clearly very talented and experienced at his job. I am terrible at visual art, but am a musician and a lot of the advice he gives here works for other art forms, whether it is music or writing a book or whatever. Accept that your not going to come up with something that has never been done and do what has been done differently. Start basic and add layers and you may have to do a bit of trial and error before you get to the right thing.
