The usefulness of ignite

So with all the changes to DOT, how useful is ignite really?

Bleeding does a much higher percentage of damage (70/210 vs 40) even though physical scaling is slightly worse than elemental, you will pretty much do a lot more damage. It's also very easy to get a high bleeding chance and duration through passives alone.

Poison does half the damage (20 vs 40) but can be stacked as much as you want, so can be a huge damage booster.

Am I missing something important about ignite? I really try to play a ignite based char at the moment, but I feel ignite will always be only a little helper instead of a source of damage like posion (and to a lesser extent bleeding) can be.

Immolate skill gem.
"Never argue with an idiot. They will take you down to their level and beat you trough experience."
Immolate doesn't need ignite though. Every source of burning would be sufficient.

And again, Ignite wouldn't be the source of damage, just a helper.

.
Making builds dependent on ailments is a pretty bad idea anyway as there are ailment-immune bosses in the game.

Holy shit you are right! They only retain the Cannot be Frozen and Cannot be knocked back tags. Well, that's great news.
So while this is good news, it still seems ignite is not meant to be a primary means of damage.
Ignite has the best scaling through Resistance negation, jacking up Damage by pulling enemies into the negatives. Assuming 40% Inc Curse Effect against 60% Less (act/map bosses), Flamm + EW totals -46%, which is enough to bring any Map boss into negative Fire Resistance, usually -16 or -11%. Elemental Equilibrium then drags it down to -61/66%, and Scorching Ray can pull another 24% off as well.
(EE is the biggest factor, being an unmitigated -50% Resist; EW and Ray are the less-important ones)

Poison would be looking at 15-20% Chaos Resist in those situations.

But unlike Ignite, you can stack poison.
