Brutus normal attacks not hitting me

After entering the Prison with my new character, I forced my way through to Brutus and as I entered the room he was in, I decided to directly confront him. This happened near the end of a wall and to my surprise Brutus never hit with any of his normal attacks, only the special ones hit me. So I was slicing him to pieces with ease without having to fear dying. Probably an issue with the wall in the way, my attacks hit as they were supposed to be but for Brutus the wall was probably considered to be in the way.

I don't know if this is the same or similar problem, but I found a spot where Brutus didn't attack me at all, not even the special attack. He just stood spinning like a sporadic carousel while I beat the crap out of him. Godly as I felt at the time, it was oddly unsatisfying afterwards. Screenie:
