" Quite the opposite: I used to be a Mod on a Sci-Fi fandom forum where someone had quite wisely set up a "No Holds Barred" board. You could post anything on that board which wasn't an actual violation of law, no matter how cruel or nasty it was otherwise. Everyone was on notice that there would be NO moderation (short of the above, to protect the forum, in general), and that their participation in those discussions was their own responsibility. Surprisingly, it wasn't quite the bloodbath one might expect (though that might have said something about the kind of posters we had, themselves), but it gave everyone who was looking to let their hair down a place to do so, without fear of "Big Brother" smacking them with a Banhammer. If folks got too salty on the main forum, Mods might warn 'em to take it to NHB, or they might take it there themselves.
