idea build question

Hello I want to try to make my own build and I want to play shadow with poison and damage over time and I was thinking about viper strike.

My question is if I can link viper strike to melee splash and then go increase AoE so with my hit I would hit as much as possible. Does poison get to other mobs hit by melee splash?

ie Poisoning whole group with one hit?

Yes.

Although I'm not seeing any advantages over using a bow. Having your Shadow ascend as an Assassin and picking up the Noxious Strike ascendancy node opens up a lot of options.
