[2.5] CI Trypanon CoC Vortex Elementalist - Cheap, Fun, Fast, Slightly off Meta

CoC + Trypanon + Vortex + Elemental Overload + EE + Flasks + Elementalist

This build is for those people looking for a fun, fast, and slightly off meta build to play. It's suited for all types of budgets (assuming you can get a Trypanon) and has high clear speed. While a bit lacking on single target damage without decent gear, it makes up for this by packing a powerful Vaal Righteous Fire, which can one shot most bosses in the game (tested up to T15, currently).

Defensively, this build isn't the best, but it's still quite playable. It doesn't have a fantastic ES pool (I have 9k with pretty solid gear) or instant leech with Vaal Pact. Porcupines are just about the deadliest thing you can encounter, and can fry you if you're not careful.

Guide in progress...

Basic Idea
- Trypanon is a unique from Perandus league that has 100% crit chance but only 0.62 aps
- Vortex's dot (including ignite) scales with spell damage
- We use Cyclone - CoC - Vortex to cast Vortex smoothly while moving
- Scale double dipping damage by stacking elemental damage, fire damage, spell damage
- Large double dipping more multipliers in CoC (1.39), Elemental Overload (1.4), Controlled Destruction (1.44)
- Vaal discipline + vaal righteous fire + elementalist guaranteed ignite for boss deletion (tested up to t15)
- Elemental equilibrium + elementalist penetration + flammability for resistance reduction

Passive Skill Tree, Bandits, Jewels (level 85)
Spoiler
This is my current character tree at level 85:

https://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAABAMCAAN1DXwOXBBYES0RUBXXGF0YahslHNwhsCL0J6ko-iqNLJwspiy_LpQy0TT3Nbk22DeDPAU9X0SrRUdFfkZSSRtJUUmxS65Mi0yzUftSU1WuVkhWY1fJWAdYd1xrXwRfamZUavpremwLbRl4L3yDfOV-WX_GghCCm4RIhXuGrodljxqPRo-mj_qQ-pErkyeXhZeVl_SYrZo7m6Gdrp_foS-m66cIpyusmK3xr5u4k76KwGbBxcNtyL_QH9DQ1abXz9gk2Vvfbd-K37DpAuvu7BjsOOxV7TzvS-9874jv6_DV8Wz31_k3_Ew=?accountName=hypernegus&characterName=TyroneJacksonX

Next 2 levels are spent getting the elemental damage jewel socket. Afterwards, might get Path of the Savant or Essence Surge.

Bandits:
Kill, Kill, Kill

Ascendancy Explanation:
Beacon of Ruin: free prolif! Helps improve clearspeed in a lot of situations.
Shaper of Desolation: IMO the best node for this build - allows you to set up guaranteed ignites with Vaal Righteous Fire.
Mastermind of Discord: casting Orb of Storms = 25% fire pen. Very good, especially since you might not be running fire penetration at all.
Pendulum of Destruction: on the way to mastermind of discord

Jewels:
Izaro's Turmoil is a very solid option for this build, as is one energy from within jewel. I'd stack as many turmoils as your resistances permit you to stack.

Gem Links
Spoiler
Not really optimized yet, since I just started playing this build, but:

Cyclone - Cast on Crit - Vortex - Inc AoE / Conc Effect - Controlled Destruction - (Fire Pen / Chance to Ignite / Life Leech)

Orb of Storms - Increased Critical Strikes - Curse on Hit - Flammability

Vaal Righteous Fire - Life Leech - Controlled Destruction - Concentrated Effect

Warlord's Mark - Blasphemy - Discipline - (Enlighten optional)

CwDT - Immortal Call - Increased Duration - (Golem of your choice)

Vaal Discipine - Increased Duration

Gear and Explanation
Spoiler

There's some expensive stuff in here - it certainly makes the build more fun and flashy, but almost everything expensive here can be replaced without sacrificing much clearspeed.

You will definitely want lightning damage on your ring to proc EE when you hit mobs (note cold will not work because of Pyre).

Get a high accuracy roll on one piece of gear (can be gloves, ring, or helmet). I've found an ~80% hit chance to be perfectly acceptable. You might be able to settle for even less.

Other than that, just focus on getting as much ES as possible.

Flasks
- Dying Sun + Silver + Quicksilver makes the build quite fast on good layout maps.
- Vinktar's is used to shock bosses / rares (I have a legacy version, so it gives me instant leech too).
- Kiara's Determination takes care of both shock and freeze removal in one flask

None of these flasks are mandatory.

Map Mods
Spoiler
Avoid:
- Elemental Reflect: (I've cleared a T10 Arsenal deathless with reflect using life leech and chance to ignite, but I would not recommend this)
- 65 - 90% chance to avoid ailments: Boss will be really hard

Annoying:
- 20% chance to avoid ailments:
- Temporal Chains
- Chilled Ground
- Monsters have % damage added as cold: Get chilled all the time

Damage nerfs:
- Enfeeble
- Monsters have resistances

Damage Tooltips (level 88)
Spoiler
The link order we use is: Vortex - CoC - Cyclone - Inc AoE / Conc Effect - Controlled Destruction - Fire Pen. We do not account for Pendulum of Destruction's 100% increased elemental damage buff.

4L (Inc AoE): 4649 damage, 3446 DoT
4L (Inc AoE + Elemental Overload): 7154 damage, 4825 DoT
4L (Conc Effect + Elemental Overload): 10736 damage, 8123 DoT

5/6L (Inc AoE): 6656 damage, 4934 DoT
5/6L (Inc AoE + Elemental Overload): 9319 damage, 6908 DoT
5/6L (Conc Effect + Elemental Overload): 15350 damage, 11615 DoT

Penetration:
4/5L (Orb of Storms): 28% Pen + 50% EE res reduction
6L (Orb of Storms, Fire Pen): 65% Pen + 50% EE res reduction

Budgeting / Gear Progression Notes
Spoiler
Required Gear:
Trypanon, Pyre, Eye of Chayula (if you have Kiara's, you can play without stun immunity).

Do I need a 6L?
No, you don't.

This build can thrash through T15's on a 4L (occasionally dropping an orb of storms for a rare). With a 5L, you'll be doing pretty decent on damage, to the point where you can kill many bosses easily by swapping in conc effect into your CoC Vortex. I honestly haven't settled on what the best 6L is yet (I haven't noticed chance to ignite significantly improving my clear consistency).

Getting enough ES
Because you don't have a shield, your ES will naturally be a bit lacking on this build. Aiming for high ES gear while maintaining resistances isn't easy, so just do the best you can, making up for resistances with your jewels if needed. If you select your maps wisely (avoid porcupines, reduced regen mods) you'll probably only find yourself in danger at bosses, so in the end ES is not that important (especially if you just want to have fun and clear fast).

Flasks
None of the flasks in my gear section are mandatory. One cheap flask setup for this build (which still clears fine), is:

Quicksilver flask of Adrenaline - Silver flask - Sulphur Flask - Basalt Flask - Atziri's Promise

You'll want an "of Heat" and an "of Staunching" suffix somewhere among your Silver, Basalt, and Sulphur Flasks.

The first unique flask I'd recommend buying is a Vessel of Vinktar - this'll let you kill bosses more easily. It should replace your Promise, and you'll need to roll an "of Grounding" suffix somewhere.

Next, I'd get a Kiara's Determination. You can either replace the silver/sulphur flask, if you want to be defensive, or the Basalt Flask, if you want to run fast.

Dying Sun gives you an impressive amount of AoE and lets you clear certain maps by running straight through the center of them.

Since the cd on coc is 0.5s, wouldn't it make more sense to run multiple skills so you can cycle through them at 0.5s intervals? Or is the attack speed with trypanon too slow for that?

I don't want to disappoint you, but.. you don't need Vaal RF or Conflux for this. Pure (with Pyre, *ba-dums*) Vortex can one-shot T15 bosses with proper setup.

@seikuu

Trypanon doesn't attack very fast at all, and all your links for vortex are pretty much top tier. You definitely don't need a second spell for clearing or bosses.

@bSun0000

Yep, Vortex can one-shot T15 bosses with the proper setup. If you're looking for that it definitely helps to crit on Vortex, like the guide you linked - you're simply going to be doing a lot more single target damage, since even with a not so consistent crit chance you only need one ignite to take out a boss. You can also go dagger + shield and get spell damage on your dagger as opposed to Trypanon, and use a shield + LL to get even more damage without sacrificing ES.

I'm fine with the way my version plays. It's not as high end of a build as full crit Vortex on T16's, but I'd say on a budget it works pretty well and clears satisfyingly fast (much faster than the build you linked). I can kill most bosses quickly by using concentrated effect vortex instead of Vaal RF, but if you only have a 5L this is definitely harder.

It's just crazy that with a 4L VRF, Vaal Discipline, conflux, and mediocre ES gear, you can fry almost any boss in the game with a fire based build.

You know, perhaps I underestimated the power of my build. I can one shot T15 bosses with conc effect Vortex :P (just needed to add shock). I'm still not doing as much damage as a LL crit vortex, but the damage is passable to say the least.
