Edealee, if you dont mind, add me in game and I will explain to you point by point. It is going to be a really long discussion which is why most of us could not afford the time to explain here.

I'll be sure to update this thread as I need help, but one lingering question I have in my mind is how much of my max life increase (or defensive things in general, energy shield, evasion etc) should I get from my tree as opposed to my gear? I've heard you should look at the tree as where you get your life from plus some perks.

Maximum Life needs both. If you neglect Life on gear, you'll have about half as much Life as someone who has both. If you neglect Life in the tree, you'll have about half as much Life as someone who has both. The main reason is that life provides "x% increased" while gear provides "+x maximum Life" (also known as flat life). These two numbers multiply against each other, which means you need both to reach "expected" Life levels.

You get flat defenses from gear, which you then scale with % increases on your tree. To use life as an example, you'd want high life rolls on as many pieces of gear as possible to give you a high base life pool to work with, then you'd scale that by picking up % life nodes in your tree (I'd recommend at least 180%+ total from your tree). If you skimp on either the flat gear rolls or the % scaling on your tree then the overall end result suffers. Same principle applies for ES, evasion, and armour- flat rolls on gear, plus % scaling from tree.

Alright so those items obviously aren't anything meta rn but I plan on using Double Strike and Cyclone as my Single Target and AoE skills respectively. I also plan on using a mixture of armor and evasion for defense, and am pursuing max health nodes on the tree, does this character have reasonable direction so far?

You are still at early game. In that sense it does not matter whether your build is 'crap' or not. This game s difficulty only peaks at end game whereby only successful builds start to shine.

Update: Level 58, seem to be doing well
You may want to look into picking an ascendancy class at some point. Normal labyrinth is quite easy when you're level 58. I'd recommend slayer, as even though the small nodes won't do anything for you, the main notables are extremely powerful, as long as you stay away from the bottom paths.

Other than that, you should really be using a "Melee physical damage support" gem on your main links. It's basically the #1 damage support for melee and is pretty much required. Your tree is still a mess, but that's part of the learning experience. You'll probably want to grab the vitality void life leech cluster at some point, along with the 0.4% life/mana leech node in it, to solve all of your mana problems.

I got the ascendancy class. Its a shame my skill tree is a mess still, how so? I felt like I made careful decisions to have a fair amount of resistance and max life while investing in duel wielding. I even opted for the mind over matter skill because I thought the trade off was really cool.

Forgive me if doing that won't place me in the top .1 percent of the fastest meta players, I'm just trying to enjoy myself in a ARPG

Glad people have been able to give strong pointers that have pushed my character a ways, if I ever come up with a poison build that has the toxicity of the forums they'll have to add at least 7 more difficulty's to the game.
