This is just not true. Getting 5 and 6 links has gotten easier than ever. People are killing Shaper or Uber atziri with WHITE WEAPONS, with double dipping poison, or ignites...

So because there exists a broken mechanic (double dipping DoTs) that only a couple builds even utilize, obtaining/crafting 5L and 6L's are fine? Strong logic kiddo.

Like I said, i have not seen a single true 6L drop (not counting Tabula) in over 600 hours of play. Those are absurd drop rates for something that is essentially mandatory to clear end game FOR ALMOST EVERY BUILD IN THE GAME.

After complaining about not getting it in 2k fusings. RNG is RNG.

That you have never seen a 6L drop is irrelevant. There are countless other ways to get them. The value of 6Ls is basically nothing these days, so trading for them is obviously the easiest way. There are div card sets for 6L chests that ARE reasonably farmable (Dapper Prodigy in Residence, or Chains that Bind in Crematorium both have relatively high drop rates, certainly high enough that they ARE possible to complete with relatively little investment).

6L Whites are not "end game" items. They're crafting bases to dump even more wealth into. I rarely see even the worst of 6L Uniques go for less than 6ex. So in your mind 6ex is a reasonable sum of wealth? That's around 600 chaos orbs on Standard fyi.

Right now in Breach SC you can get all kinds of 6L bases for under 50 chaos. The amount of currency it takes to craft something usable out of one of those is trivial.

If we're talking about specific unique chest pieces, then you go with a 5L until you can afford to either 6L it or buy a 6L. There isn't any content in the game that plenty of builds can't do on a 5L.

Personally, I always plan for the 5L and happily accept the 6L if it comes.

My general process is 6s the item then fuse until I get a 5L (which means stop) or if I just hit the 6L, which is a nice bonus.

For example:

First Perfect Form I bought this league, when I was planning on using it for my second character. I bought this one as a 5L for fairly cheap. I decided I would buy another one (better rolled) and manually try to link it. If I get a 5L then it would be a slight upgrade, 6L a huge upgrade.

I bought the next one, and this happened:
Spoiler

Got the 6s in ~50 jews, hit the 6L on fuse #37, and got the 4 off colors I wanted in one click of 'At least one Blue' (4 chromes).

RNG is RNG. Sometimes you get lucky, and other times you don't. (Although that's probably the luckiest I've been in quite some time).

That said, every 6L I have that I manually crafted hit the 6L before the 5L, since I always stop if I hit 5.

I've been playing PoE regularly since 2012 and have never 6l an item. I basically gave up and said that it'll never happen. These days I just fuse till I hit a 5l and stop. F&ck the RNG Gods. :)
The Lab, making a great game good since 2016.
As noted above once I hit 5L I'm finished fusing.

Blew 600 fusings on an Atziris and ever since, I just convert all my fusings to other currency and buy what I want straight up. In those 600 fusings, I saw ONE SINGLE 5 link. Currency crafting in this game is a joke and only serves to make the top percentile of the rich even richer. See Mirror worthy crafted items and Mirror Service as an example.

Crafting with currency is a waste of time because you have too little control over it. My rule is that anything over 4L, I don't self-craft.

5L and 6L are becoming too mandatory in this game. With every expansion, the end game becomes less accessible for the casual. It's like a constantly moving goal line.

For linking, they should prevent new fusings from rolling less than the current number of links. This wouldn't necessarily increase the odds of getting a 6L, but it would ensure that you don't brick your 5L. I also think that with current content, 6L is a bit too rare. I have not seen a single 6L drop in over 600 hours of play, and that is insane to fathom.

Crafting with currency needs to become a bit more controllable. People don't game at casinos when the odds are stacked too heavily in the houses favor. Casino's profit because the house has like a 50.5%-51% chance of beating the player, with just enough variables given to the player so that they feel like they have choice and strategy in the outcome...and they do to an extent. Trying to craft your own 6L with the mechanics offered is just complete dumb luck and just feels like the house is bending you over with no lube.

The Vorici recipes only serve the purpose of making you feel like crap every time you use a piece of currency.

Odds are fine. Currency crafting is profitable is you do it for long enough. You can get fucked in short term, but it pays off eventually. 6 links are not mandatory, and are within reach unless you are a casual, in which case you don't really deserve one.
I never stop at 5L - I stop when pile of fuses ends. I usually try jumping from one 5L to another with saved fuses I have determined to waste (I were selling them when they worth like 120 fuse per ex, today prices are just a bigger waste of fuses than even fusing).
