As iv stated several times here: "the sum maximization of the future freedom of action for all entities capable of mutual cooperation". Its an ethical formalism and a goal.

Fundamentally, all values and ethics are assertions. We may have instincts or learned behaviors, but that does not mean they are ideal (or even desired) ... nor that we should forever be bound them.

People often look to happiness as the ultimate goal of life, but i see that as amongst the most selfish and dangerous (detrimental to long term sustainability of the species) path possible. Emotion is nothing more than electro-chemical messaging, it is not the ultimate in human existence; nay, it is the most primitive and animalistic aspect of our minds.
