How does Ci + Ghost reaver + Vaal pact work?

Sorry to revisit this issue, but apparently I'm an idiot. So I was reading about the interaction between ghost reaver and life leech and read about ghost reaver here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/76413/page/1 . Is this hidden life pool stuff really true? I always imagined that if I didn't take vaal pact with ghost reaver, the maximum leech cap would be calculated using my energy shield, not my total life if I wasn't CI. If so, I understand why if you take ghost reaver, it is almost mandatory to take vaal pact.

ES Leech is ES Leech, it scales off your Energy Shield and not your Life.
