[2.6] Ms. Chieftain: The wave of Molten Destruction (T16 viable, Good lab runner)

Hi and welcome to my Molten Strike Chieftain build guide. The build is not one of your mainstream meta-builds, yet it is a quite tanky dual wielding inferno of molten destruction using up to a whopping 6 Keystones.

Ms. Chieftain: The Wave of Molten Destruction

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • A true viable "melee" build, you will be standing in the middle of shit and surviving.
  • Can facetank most stuff.
  • Can run T16 maps.
  • A pretty good Lab runner, most traps are trivial with our life regen and mitigation with 7 endurance charges up.
  • Not Meta :)

Cons
  • Clear speed is only acceptable.
  • The "lag time" for the molten projectiles to hit the ground can be lethal.
  • Our 60+ molten projectiles per second can cause lag
  • If Xoph's blood isn't available in the next league we'll have to spend 4 extra points to get Avatar of Fire
  • Can probably be run on a budget, but some expensive items are required for a good setup.
  • Dying Sun Ruby Flask is expensive, but it is so nice for use.

Changes for 2.6
The 2.6. Changes brought us some really nice buffs, in particular the new Jewel Wildfire. With two of these beauties we get +4 additional projectiles, +50% area of effect on the MS projectiles, and some additional fire damage. These additonal 4 projectiles enables us to drop GMP from our gem setup, and you can replace it with Faster Attacks or Added Fire. Added Fire gives the most damage, but FA will probably give you more survivability and QoL.

Mechanics & Screenshots

Damage

This build is 100% Fire based. Molten strike has a 60% conversion and Avatar of Fire takes care of the rest.

Choice of Weapons
Doryani's Catalyst gives us a cheap 300 pdps+ weapon with the added benefit of providing us with up to 132% increased elemental damage.
Razor of the Seventh's Sun is mainly used for its defensive abilities, but its 100% increased Melee Physical Damage against Ignited Enemies is good as it stacks well with Ngamahu, Flame's advances 35% increased damage against burning enemies. As we get 25% ignite chance from tree, and Herald of Ash helps with ignites too, we should always be attacking burning enemies. The 100% increased burning damage is a small boost as well.

Fire Penetration
  • 18% from Passive tree
  • 37% from Support Gem
  • 10% from Xoph's Blood
  • 44% from Flammability (48% with q20 blasphemy)

A grand total of -109% Fire resistance, not bad. -87% on bosses with their 50% curse effectiveness.

Strength & Iron Grip
Our ascendancy gives us 10% more Strength, with Xoph's blood providing with another 10%. Thus I am currently around 700 Strength, that's 140% Melee Physical Damage with Iron grip adding another 140% to our molten projectiles.

Point Blank
MS projectiles travel between 5 and 20 units. Point blank gives 50% more damage at 0-10 Units, and 30% more at 20 Units. Thus Point blank gives our projectiles a nice multiplier between 1.3 and 1.5.

Source MS projectile distance

Resolute Technique
Your hit's cannot be evaded, what a shocker eh? =)

Other stuff
Gain 20% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire damage if you have killed recently (Hinekora, Death's Fury), and another 15% from our herald of ash. Then we have a lot of other increases from the tree, but nothing that's of note.

Defences

Increased Life & Strength
  • ~700 Strength adds 350 life.
  • 192% increased life from tree.
  • 4 Jewel slots for another 20-28% increased life.

Damage Reduction
  • 7 Endurance Charges = 28% Physical Damage Reduction.
  • Fortify = 20% reduced damage taken from hits.
  • Arctic Armour = 13% Less physical damage taken & 12% Less Fire damage taken (good for reflect).
  • 154% increased armour (not much but always something).

Immunities
  • Stun Immunity from Unwavering Stance.
  • Ignite Immunity from Chieftain's Ramako, Sun's Light.

Leech & Regen
  • 7.4% Passive Life Regen from skill tree.
  • 4.9% additional Life regen with 7 endurance charges (gets an extra 0.5% regen per charge from Ramako, Sun's Light).
  • 1.2% Damage leeched as life (1% from Hinekora, Death's Fury and 0.2% from Doryani's Catalyst)
  • Recover 1% of maximum life when you ignite an enemy. With 60+ projectiles per second, a 25%+ ignite chance, that should be another 15% life recovered/second.

Gear

For your gear one of the most essential things is your helmet enchant, you want, I mean really want, the 3 additional Molten Strike Projectiles. Unfortunately in the current meta noone puts enchantments on Royal Burgonets while running lab, so you will most likely get a Devoto's Devotion. It's still a good helmet for us, but I'd love to have a life roll on my helmet. In addition to the life we could possibly get a +50 Intelligence roll on the helmet, which would solve our lack of intelligence (we're such brutes).

For weapons you want a high PDPS Doryani's Catalyst with a high Increased Elemental Damage roll in your off hand, and high (relatively speaking) Razor of the Seventh Sun for your main-hand (for some reason this gave me an increased tooltip DPS, check for yourself though)

Get a 6L with a high life roll on it, I got mine for 35c, so it doesn't have to be a godly one. 6L, Life, and some armour and/or evasion is good enough. If you want to optimise, try to go only armour based items, and you can save 1 skill point on Iron Reflexes.

Flasks

For those who can afford it, Dying Sun is a godly flask for us. 2 additional projectiles, 30% increased AoE, and +6% maximum fire resistance. More damage and helps a lot with reflect.

Lion's Roar is awesome for the dmg increase, and as a bonus, it allows us to position bosses that isn't knockback immune into a corner where more projectiles will hit them.

Jewels

2x Wildfire Jewels. Then a selection of jewels with a combination of the following mods.
+% Maximum Life
+% Damage
+% Fire Damage
+% Attack speed (1h, dual wield, or general)
+% Chance to ignite
+% Area Damage
+2 mana gained from each enemy hit by your attack (REQUIRED on 1 jewel)

If you can get any of the following on the jewel that will serve as well
+ Intelligence
+ Strength
+% Physical damage with 1h/dual wielding

Current Gear

Leveling

Molten strike doesn't have the fastest clear speed, thus not the fastest leveling either. For fast leveling I'd recommend going 2h up until 80 (or at least 75 for Doryani's Catalyst), just pick up 2h nodes along the skill tree instead of 1h and you should be fine. Cleave or Sweep your way to 28 and then pick up EQ, as easy as that ;)

Taming the Molten Strike (Boss setup with The Taming)

Swap out Melee phys for Chance to Ignite (need recolouring so it's quite annoying), strap on your Taming and Emberwake and you should be ready to have some fun. Your Molten Shell should explode for some really nice damage as well. I have found that the Taming setup will decrease your map speed, so put it into careful consideration before you decide to go for The Taming + Emberwake.

Chest:
2x Wildfire Jewels: Molten Strike + Fire Penetration + Chance to Ignite + Multistrike + Weapon Elemental Damage + Faster Attacks / Added Fire
No Wildfire Jewels: Molten Strike + Fire Penetration + Greater Multiple Projectiles + Chance to Ignite + Multistrike + Weapon Elemental Damage

Molten strike has a 60% Phys to Fire Conversion and then I get Avatar of Fire from the Xoph's Blood amulet, which converts the rest of my physical to fire.

Hello, i like your build and the skill itself. Are there any mapmod it can't do?
hi nice build but why not berserker?

Hello, thanks. Elemental Reflect is probably the only mod it shouldn't run, and on harder maps I'd probably avoid No Regen as well. The build has a lot of leech so you won't be stranded without it, but you'll lose some survivability.

Thanks. While the berserker would be a pretty good choice as well, I wanted a fire oriented build that utilized the Razor in a good way.

So some of the reasons why I chose the Chieftain are:

  • Additional Ignite Chance, aka more life gain from the Razor
  • 10% fire penetration.
  • 10% increased Strengh. The increased strength from the ascendancy and the amulet gives a lot of life, and quite a bit of damage from Iron Grip.
  • "Free" endurance charge generation while mapping.
  • Lots of life regen, and 0.5% additional life regen per endurance charge.
  • all this and some extra damage, utility, and survivability that the chieftain offers.

If you want to go a bersker just pick Cloaked in Savagery & Aspect of Carnage, but then I you might consider replacing the razor with a shield or a second doryani's.
