Standalone PoE - Steam

Hi,
got the following problem: just installed PoE on my laptop (took the downloader from this page). My current account is linked to steam, however. Now when I login with my credentials no characters are being shown. Do i seriously need to download the entire installer AGAIN and install it all over via steam? More specifically, when I use my steam login credentials it tells me that this account doesn't exist :|

If you created your account through Steam, you won't have an email address associated with it, however if you email support@grindinggear.com, we may be able to add an email to your account for you.
