Pets, behaviour in hideout - how is it supposed to work?

So, I like pets. I have a lot of them in my hideout, and the idea was that they'd happily stroll around there. They're not really, though. They tend to stick to the borders of the hideout, and that just looks weird.

Have a look at this pic for example:



They just flock together like that, hugging the border of the hideout for no apparent reason.

A few questions, then:

1) Are pets supposed to occupy a certain radius from where they were initially spawned?
2) Are pets supposed to move around wherever there is free space to do so?
3) The flocking behaviour as can be seen on my screenshot, is that intentional or just a bug of some sort? They always seem to end up in similar configurations no matter what I do.
