3 maps -> one map of next tier is a pretty common recipe. And recipe items tend to inherit the lowest rarity and item level from the components. That's something common to a lot of recipes. You don't have to remember a special 'rare map' recipe. Not to mention most of the recipes form categories and generally make sense. It's only the recipes for creating some unique items that are rather arbitrary, unless you're intimately familiar with the unique and its properties.
