Or round robin, rather than random.

Or, yes, it's from WoW / MMOs, but a pop up lootbox with need / greed buttons is a fairly simple way to distribute drops as well. You will still have the problem of some people being asshats and clicking need all the time, but that's an asshat problem rather than a technical one.

It is not easy to do this. I even tried for a while to use a skill with increased rarity gem for finishing strikes and that didn't work well. With multiple people fighting it is too random.

And it is much easier to handle such people then ones in the front killing less but taking more loot.

As a devil's lightning witch, I approve that all items go to the person who kills the mobs.
