[Discussion] Why is pornography censored?

Hi everyone.

Today I want to start a discussion here regarding how some stuff is banned and made illegal.

I've been wondering about this issue for a long time now: Why is pornography censored?
Just to be clear: I'm not talking about anything related to Path of Exile or games specifically, this is the Off Topic forum and I'm talking about society in general.

So, why does society and governmental entities condemn some stuff like pornography?

Why is it so bad that children can not have access to it?

How come children can have access to violence and almost any other thing but not to pornography?

I, for instance, am a very, very rational person. In my opinion no one should have his/hers access denied to anything. This includes not only pornography but also violence, drugs, alcohol, etc.
Why should children, or anyone, be blocked to something they want?

I don't use drugs, I have no addictions and I don't even consume alcohol, but if I WANTED to, why should someone else say I can't? Shouldn't it be my choice in the end? How come other people have the right to choose how I live MY life?

Returning to pornography and people of minor age, why people declare that pornography is bad for children?
Why are people trying to blind children for no good reason?

But what intrigues me most is how violence is ok while pornography is not. Not that I think violence should be also censored, my opinion is that everyone should be told and shown everything they want to hear or see, after all, there is REAL world out there. Reality is what matters.

What's the reason after all? Is it to discourage children from having sex? That can't be it, otherwise racing shows would also be banned to discourage children from getting into a car and driving.

And the thing is, in many or most places minors can legally have access to violence, alcohol, even having sex themselves BUT NOT access to pornography.

Is there any good reason why children shouldn't be able to watch pornography the same way they watch cartoons or any other TV show?

My opinion is the following: NO ONE should be unable to get access to anything they want (as long as they do not interfere with other's well being, of course).

Even if it's a wrong choice, it should still be your choice to make. But unlike drugs that DO harm you, violence and pornography DON'T EVEN DO THAT! They don't harm you or anyone else. Pornography should be seen as a natural thing. How come even OUR BODY is a tabu?

What is your opinion? What do you think about this matter? Please discuss in a constructive way.

I didn't get to read it :(

I think you should post your opinion. We are here to discuss after all.

Origination was right to edit themselves. It was a very...very inflammatory statement that would be better served with some more thought.

But is not entirely wrong.

My take on it is a little more primal. Pornography concerns reproduction. Children should not be initiated into the processes of reproduction before they are able to cope with the consequences thereof.

...I mean, did you see Interview With A Vampire?!
Warhammer 40k Inquisitor: where shotgunning is not only not nerfed, it is deeply encouraged.

Dogma > Souls, but they're masterworks all. You can't go wrong.

I was right about PoE2 needing to be a separate, new game. It was really obvious.

After I wrote my answer, I noticed he had PMed me his post so I did actually read it. And I completely agree with him. Also, I don't see how it could be that bad to have it here. Although there are people who could disagree with what he said and then deleted, it was still a nice addiction to this topic with no kind of insult whatsoever.

Anyway, about your input on this matter, I don't see how that applies. We are in an era that sexual education is massive. Today everyone knows everything about sexuality. Everyone knows about sexual protection. And I don't see why children shouldn't be initiated into the processes of reproduction when even one of the most iconic images of children is them asking their mothers where babies come from.

And also, pornography is not only about reproduction, is also about pleasure.

It's funny how this reminded me of that Simpsons' episode with the nuns that sing "If you're happy and you know it, that's a sin!"

Also, I did not see Interview With A Vampire. Mind telling what it's about?

Only because when you talk about that subject on the internet, people get very defensive. All it leads to is people arguing, not willing to evaluate other people's opinions, and over time it just leads to massive flame wars.

I get your point, but if we are not able to mention some topics, how are we going to be able to discuss certain matters on the internet?
What I want to achieve is a healthy discussion about pornography and age limitations and if someone else isn't able to be civil, that's why we have moderators here.

Also, I'm going to have to agree with you. There are virtually no reasons that children of younger ages should be exposed to knowledge about sex education, contraceptives ect. In this day and age, studies have proven that informing younger people about it leads to less STDs and less teen abortions, but at the moment, people are very resilient to change, and want to cling onto their old ways.

Exactly! There isn't even a single reason why it shouldn't be allowed!

Replying to what Charan said, Then why are children able or allowed to watch violence and many other stuff? Are they ready to understand that but not pornography?
So in here we have 2 cases: We either lock kids in some sort of cage and prevent them from getting access to about 90% of what the world has to offer, or we let them get access to everything. Of course this doesn't mean that kids shouldn't have parents or tutors to teach them what is good and bad (like legalizing every drug and letting people choose what they want to do with it), but banning children's access to something that doesn't harm them in ANY way just doesn't make sense.

Also I'd like to note that sex, in my opinion, should not be glorified or promoted. But, in our society, where sex is becoming a more casual thing, we become more prone to problems. Problems such as increased STDs and more abortions. I think with the current way that we're headed, there's no way to slow down the popularity of sex in our society, and that the only way to counter it is to inform people about the problems that sex can have.

I'm also one for freedom of choice, and I believe people should have the freedom of doing what they want, as long as they aren't hurting themselves or other people.
