Server-Side Latency Spikes at the Start of Races

The last 3-5 days or so there's been a server-side latency issue. At the start of races, and often at the beginning of a new instance in races, i get a few lag spikes. The rest of the instance is always ok.

I'm using the California gateway, and WinMTR tests show absolutely perfect stats during these spikes. Yet the in-game latency meter (F1) clearly shows the lag spikes, not to mention major lockstep rubberbanding is unmistakeable.

This is similar to the server-side lag spikes that we've been getting in towns for several months now. Something is up with some of your servers it seems.

Bump. This is still occuring a week later and is not normal. it only occurs at the beginning of races (when the alarm sounds, not when you create the instance), and at the start of new instances.

Again, it's similar to the constant town server latency issues that started plaguing the game months ago, but less severe.

Perhaps the race servers and town servers need upgrading, or have some kind of configuration problem, or a California gateway issue with town and race servers?

Bump.

Did the Soulthirst #74 race, pretty sure every single non-town instance had this issue. Lasts 5-10 seconds at the start of each, then everything is perfect.

Bump.

Did the Endless Ledge #75 race just now. Same thing, start of every instance has server-side lag spikes for the first 5-10 secs (with Lockstep stuttering), then everything is perfect.

Bump.

Did the Headhunter race #77 race just now. Same thing.

Hi unsane, please follow this guide, and post the results of the MTR collected when you have the issue in this thread.

The in-game latency graph uses a similar method of collecting data. When you first enter an instance it will be inaccurate, which is something to keep in mind.

Our server environment isn't under load during the times you specify, and we haven't had any additional reports of this issue.

As i said in the first post, my WinMTR latency report shows everything perfect, 0 packet loss across the board. The F1 meter shows spikes. This appears to be a server side issue.

Also note that i've tested non-races and the problem doesn't occur. Again, likely an issue with the race servers or gateways as they relate to race servers.

While the graph may be inacurrate when first entering, the rubberbanding i mentioned is unmistakable.

Happened again today in all 3 races. Just because no one else has reported this issue doesn't mean it's on my end.

Regardless, i'll post the flawless WinMTR results after my first race tomorrow, since no one believes what a random user says. :P

It's not that anyone doesn't trust you, but the information you post could be used to submit to the host if the problem is on their side of things. When you say your stats are perfect, you mean no packet loss, but do you also see no spikes in latency in any of the hops? It's one thing to have no loss, but another to have no points where latency spikes.

O I C, i guess i put my foot in my mouth. I'm so used to dealing with WinMTR for packet loss that i didn't know what else it shows on there aside from the first 4 columns. First, here's a WinMTR without testing in a race...

That one looks good:

No packet loss and your worst response time is 90. When running it for the races let it go for 500 cycles to give it a good chance to show problems. Let us know the results when racing!
