We don't know a lot about the beast. It could be good or bad, right now its thaumaturgical influence screwed Wraeclast, but the whole clusterfuck could be very well man made. It probably died in Act IV (we destroyed four hearts).

Malachai was Chitus' thaumaturgist (Chitus was the Eternal's emperor). He researched gems and other types of thaumaturgy. We know he ended controlling the beast to reshape the world to his twisted will.

It's hard to know for sure if he was basically evil, or he was just amoral and then influenced like Piety was. Dialla and him are unreliable narrators after all, they say non consistent stuff all the time (see the whole "I'll break her heart to not break her soul").

The beast is a large plot hole that resides under a town of nine people that sucks up and lore that comes near it and morphs them into: Voll without his signature charges, Deodre with a tongue (Maligaro supposedly cut it out), Daresso without his godly dodge or block. Lastly, and in my opinion the most atrocious, the most powerful low life ES mage in all of Path of exile unique history that does not use low life or even ES.

Dominus realized this and and converted Chitus house into a shrine that turned him into a Zombie Bunny.

I really like the plot until whatever went down in act 4 happened.

Makes me wonder if perhaps there is more to the beast than that even...

We know that controlling the beast allows one to reshape the world and that the attempts to do so led to both the Great Cataclysm and the events of act 4. What if the beast was MUCH older than that though and(before being corrupted) was what created the world in the first place? And now us killing Malachai also killed the Beast as well and this will lead to the end of the world? Unless of course, we somehow prevent it in act 5?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We can't know for sure without knowing more about the Vaal.

Maybe it's a creation god, like some kind of brahma or demiurge.

Maybe it's a very powerful eldritch abomination that doesn't give a fuck about everything.

The Beast is a carbon friendly energy source, so far localized to one place deep in the Highgate mines. Whether there are other beasts, or similar creatures deep underground throughout the continent is unknown. Given the enormous societal influence of the one beast we know of, it is unlikely that there are more, unless they are in hibernation or some other inactive state.

The fact that the beast is found in proximity of the thaumaturgical gems hints that there is either a cause and effect between the two, or at least a symbiotic relationship. Perhaps the gems provide a reservoir that allows the natural energy of the Beast to resonate and thrive. Perhaps the gems had their own power and the Beast feeds off of them.

My Tinfoil hat theory is that the Beast is from Beyond, and the concentration of gems (along with some thauamturgical twiddling) created a portal that allowed the Beast's mind state to emerge into Wraeclast. We have not seen the full physical Beast yet. At some point we will need to take the fight to the Beast's home world.

I don't think the beast is dead, because thaumaturgy still exists. The beast is supposed to be the source of all thaumaturgy, so your gems would have become inert if the beast was truly dead. Or lolore. Whichever suits you best.
