you can't replace "some gear dropped for him" replace with "he dropped some gear", it has the opposite meaning aka the player threw it away.

Well, you are only partially right.
It's not a grammatical issue, but rather a vocabulary one, the word being the evolution of an evolution.
It is much more logical when you see it as an evolution of "I found a drop", which itself is an evolution of "item that was dropped".
