You can transfer gear between characters, but not between leagues. If you start a hardcore character you cannot give his or her to a new HC character when you die. Gear in your HC stash, though, stays in the HC stash - for your next HC character. Start in Standard or Ruckus and this won't be an issue.

Yes, it's mostly to learn what builds work; if you'd prefer, build a character using one of the many build guides found in the individual character class forums. Make sure it's a 1.3 or later guide. Have fun!

In each town there will be a stash that you can use to transfer items between your characters. You can buy more room in this stash... which is the only non-cosmetic purchase of any real effect on the game. You don't NEED to buy more room, but you will likely want to.
