How can one tell if reckoning gem is triggering (working)? I see nothing, ever, and mI know I am getting hit and sometimes blocking...

It's a decently sized lasershield being tossed around. Can't miss it really.
Also, you can tell by monsters taking Damage. Simplest way? Go to a low level area. | |

Don't forget, it requires a melee weapon, not just a shield.
