Standard or Torment League?

Peace,
im new to this game so i created a standard league character wich is now level 41.I know there is also a league called torment league but i don´t know what the difference is between them.

Sure i know in torment are "spirits" and stuff but has the torment league any advantage then the standard?I want to keep on playing this char and not level a new one in torment^^
