New to POE - Suggestions on where to start? Thanks!

Greetings!

I am new to POE and I am interested in being a 'full time' player. I am curious to know if there are any learning resource you all can recommend to me to help me get started. Guides, tutorials. etc,. This game seems to have a steep learning curve at first glance. Any help, suggestions, or advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

The best thing you can do IMO is create a "lab rat" character on standard league (where death penalty is low, and trading is cheaper) and then just play through the game as you feel comfortable.
Be as suicidal as you need to be, push your own limits.
Throw yourself into danger and see what it takes to survive, or inversely what can kill you and how to avoid.
That's probably the best way to learn the game by doing.

Also...
- Use the PoE Wiki, it can be outdated in places but its mostly solid.
- The game uses specific wording (eg. added damage = flat damage bonus, more damage = total multiplied) Know these terms and the game becomes common sense.

And as a general rule...
- The game's primary method of killing you post level 50 is by spike damage aka. 1 shots.
As a result glass cannon builds don't exactly work beyond a certain point.
- Unless youre running a very gimmicky build, the core damage stats (flat damage, speed, critical) contribute far more to your damage output than trying to build around a certain synergy one of your abilities might have.

Path of Exile is great all around, but the best thing to learn about is how much something is worth. Look up vendor recipes and pay attention in the trade chat why an item is worth so much. Also, a good tip is that not all damage must come from the passive tree.
Agreed with the above, there's no substitute for experience. That said, there are a couple of good resources for beginners to get the basics down. Try this and this (even if you haven't played Diablo). Otherwise, I'd just play, and ask here or on reddit for specific questions that come up as you go.
Have you done something awesome with Sire of Shards? PM me and tell me all about it!

Awesome! Thank all of you for your answers. Esp the one that teaches you POE from the standpoint of a DII player. Looking over that now. I'm a bit of a nerd so I got some spreadsheets open so I can save all this important stuff. lol.
playing and reading is the best way to learn. have poe wiki ready every time you need some technical info on skills and mechanics.

The basic tip is that unlike other recent games, you cant ignore defensive stats. Decent HP is a must for every single build. Other defences cant substitute for it so take all life passives that are near your path... and dont expect too much from your first character(s) :)

If you are D2 veteran who likes complex game mechanics and theorycrafting, you are going to love this game :)

also use https://poebuilder.com/ to play around. It probably wont make much sense at first but it will let you plan out your characters. Its also an easy way to see all of the nodes and what they do. If something is unclear just look at up over at http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Path_of_Exile_Wiki
