how do you know he uses attacks and not Ethereal knives? Only two of the gems you mentioned can affect EK

it's spectral throw. it's a attack gem not spell gem.

Spectral Throw is an attack that uses the melee weapon you have equipped for a ranged attack. In this case you can use Physical Projectile Attack Damage, Faster Attacks and , to a much lesser extend, Faster/Slower Projectile support gems to directly increase its physical DPS.

Furthermore, you can use the Added Fire support since this will give you a bunch of extra fire damage that scales with your physical damage the same way as the Hatred aura (cold damage). If you use both the Hatred aura and the Added Fire support gem, you may also want to ad in Weapon Elemental Damage support. This combination will give you ~125% of your physical damage as mixed cold/fire elemental damage on top.

If you are going for crit with Daggers, Claws or Staves, you can also add in the crit related support gems like Increased Critical Damage etc.

[TL;DR]
Most effective damage support gems for physical spectral throw:
* Physical Projectile Attack Damage (more phys damage but slightly lower attack speed)
* Faster Attacks (does exactly what you think it does)
* Added Fire damage (adds up to 38% of your physical damage as extra fire damage on top)
(* Hatred Aura: not a support gem obviously but works the same way as the added fire support)

If you use Hatred + Added Fire -> Weapon Elemental Damage

If you go heavy crit (>40% critchance): Increased Critical Damage

Spectral Throw (ST) has the following tags: Projectile, Attack. This means that support gems that include those tags will interact with it in some way.

In terms of increasing your damage the most important aspect will always be the weapon you use. Increasing the damage on your weapon has a much greater impact than any single support gem.

However, assuming you are using a weapon of suitable damage for you level there are many options for you to increase your damage. Although Lesser Multiple Projectile (LMP) and Greater Multiple Projectiles (GMP) actually incur tooltip DPS loss they will significantly increases your AOE damage and clear speed and is often the first support people will link to ST.

Other skill gems that work nicely with ST are: Faster Attacks, Added Fire Damage, Physical Projectile Attack Damage, Faster Projectiles, Increased Critical Strikes and Increased Critical Damage or Increased Weapon Elemental Damage. The effectiveness of the these support gems is obviously subject to the actual weapon you are using and how you want to scale your damage.

Other ways to increase your damage would be the use of damage based auras, most notably Herald of Ash and Hatred.

However, after telling you all this, the best advice I can offer you is to simply go and do some testing. Swap these gems around and see which you feel increases your clear speed. A lot of the time your tool tip DPS is not always super accurate. I often like to test things out and find which feels smoother.
