So... Another case of "Unable to MapViewOfFile in MapChunk," but something odd this time.

As I think a lot are familiar with, yes, it's a known issue for those of us using 32-bit versions of Windows. But however, there's something unusual in this one case...

The big one is that whenever I try to enter the Scepter of God from the Imperial Gardens, it ALWAYS gives me this error no matter what. So far, any OTHER instance boundary does not seem to act like this. Rather, in most cases, I get between 30-120 minutes or so between crashes, and in those cases it usually occurs when doing a portal back to town. (naturally, when I return, said portal was gone)

So far I've attempted to enter the Scepter of God (Merciless; haven't tried yet on Cruel or Normal) over a dozen times, and have gotten this error constantly. I HAVE tried using numerous different tactics... Disabling the firewall vs. having it on, setting the garbage collection command line parameter to 2 or 1... And I've suffered through Medium-quality textures, too.

It's been by and far the most frustrating experience I've had in this game; I'm prevented from finishing the main questline as a result. Doubly frustrating given that I readily run games like Crysis/Crysis 2, known to be infinitely more demanding, without any issues, performance or stability-wise.

So, I wonder... Does anyone know of any OTHER means of trying to avoid said errors? GGG knew of this sort of issue (a result of using a memory mapper that likely is woefully insufficient for a massive game) over a year ago, and it saddens me to see it still persists.

Though I don't believe the following will provide any useful clues, the following is the information I know someone will invariably post JUST to ask for:

Before anyone comments, yes, the CPUTIN sensor is glitchy. That's a common occurrence.

If you are still having frequent crashes, you can turn your Texture Quality down even further by manually editing the production_Config.ini file. You can find this file in your Documents/My Games/Path of Exile folder. If you find the line texture_quality=1 and change the number to 3 or higher, you'll reduce the texture quality even further. Note that this may make it much harder to see some enemy spell effects, however it may help you here.

I thank you for the swift reply.

I guess I may be forced to in order to get through that... But by that time it'd get perhaps too ugly to where it'd really hamper enjoyment of the game.

I guess I'm also frustrated through knowing how ludicrous this sort of issue is... I know it largely relates to how the the main memory's used for holding onto textures for objects/tilesets not currently shown, when the video card has perhaps enough texture memory to hold the entire game's resources simultaneously.

Another frustration is on the audio side; while I don't actually experience any notable lag or FPS drops in spite of having a Creative Labs sound card, I DID notice when, among other testing, disabling the audio part of the game somehow saves it like 6-700MB on its memory footprint, which seems mind-boggling.

Lastly, of course, is the frustration in being fortunate enough to have a video card vastly more powerful than what >90% of PC gamers are using, yet having to turn settings down anyway.

Does GGG have a timetable for possibly renovating/replacing the problematic code? I know it's been known about for a while... And while I know any single change can't be GUARANTEED to fix the issue, it's been a bit distressing not knowing what (if anything) is currently being done to address the issue.

And on another question, I wonder what significance/meaning, if any, comes from the fact that while I've experienced some crashing from other loading, among all cases of this error (I'd estimate approximately 100 times so far) it's almost always been from one of TWO (relatively reproduceable) occasions: either entering the Scepter of God from the Imperial Gardens, or taking a portal back to town. (in any act, but SPECIFICALLY entering town, not returning from it)

The latter is especially an odd one. It's occurred across various leagues, too; one of my race attempts was partly ruined as a result of that. Telling is that on the next races I took, I avoided using portals entirely, and ONLY waypoints... And thusly never experienced a crash.

I don't know what you're frustrated with.

You're running into two problems... both of which are easily corrected by yourself to get rid of the issue.

First, you are running a 32-bit OS which has known issues with maximum addressable memory. You shouldn't be running a 32-bit OS anymore. There hasn't really been a desktop CPU produced in the last 15 years that wasn't 64-bit. You really should upgrade. The only excuse people have is that XP was crappy on 64-bit (so you should already be upgraded from that anyway), and some older legacy hardware doesn't work well in 64-bit either (which should also be upgraded unless you have specific WORK requirements).

Secondly, you're running with only 2GB of RAM. That is the BARE minimum required back in BETA. Things have changed in PoE a lot since Beta, and the newer content has higher requirements due to their size. It's not something that GGG needs to update the specs for because it is VERY hardware specific and dependent. There are some instances of 32-bit windows with 2GB of RAM that actually work. It's rare, but it happens.

So you need to upgrade to 64-bit OS and get at least 4GB of RAM. Doing that will fix your issue. You cannot wait for (or expect) a fix from GGG. It's unreasonable. Most next-gen games are starting to require 4GB and 64-bit OS anyway except those run by HUGE publishers. I think if you want to continue gaming, you need to upgrade.

This isn't console gaming. This is PC gaming. If your PC doesn't work with the game, then you need to upgrade. That is the reasonable expectation in the PC Gaming world.

I don't know what you're frustrated with.

You're running into two problems... both of which are easily corrected by yourself to get rid of the issue.

The frustration is precisely that: that the expected "solution" is that I should pay to upgrade a machine that can play EVERY OTHER PC GAME OUT THERE perfectly fine... But not this one, which, technologically, is pretty laid-back and dated, and is caused by actual BUGS (not simply "poor optimization") that have been well-known and documented for over a year.

First, you are running a 32-bit OS which has known issues with maximum addressable memory. You shouldn't be running a 32-bit OS anymore. There hasn't really been a desktop CPU produced in the last 15 years that wasn't 64-bit.

Secondly, you're running with only 2GB of RAM.

The fact that you say each separately as a "point" makes me question your credentials to be replying to anyone here... 32-bit OSes do have an address limit, of course, but that doesn't matter when one only has 2 GB of physical memory; the limit for Windows 7 32-bit, generally, is 3.5 GB. (32 bits of adress space generally gets you a total of 4 GB of address space, with Windows typically using 512 MB, or 0.5 GB, to provide addresses for devices that are not physical memory)

Also, I'd note that Windows 2000 hasn't even had the 15th anniversary since its RTM, and was only ever made in an IA-32 version. And it's been less than 10 years since the x86-64 version of Windows XP has been out.

So it's unreasonable to have any expectation for a developer producing a monetized game, (which means that they ARE making money off of it) to develop patches to fix the bugs with it? That's a step beyond simply saying it's unreasonable to expect any programmer to bother optimizing their code whatsoever.

As far as the RAM requirements growing... I'd point back to what I noticed earlier, that as much as HALF of the RAM usage of the game comes purely as a result of the audio system... Which definitely means something is very wrong in the code. So it's not progress, it's bugs.

This is why I was hoping only GGG people would reply; in general, I've found that "community" responders in tech support threads have levels of hostility that readily exceed their actual expertise.

"every other PC game out there" is a bit of an overstatement, because I can name a few which have a 4GB or 8GB limit to the RAM requirement.

You want to PC game with the big boys, then you need to be aware of what comes with that. It's as I said before. If you want to buy 1 piece of hardware and play "any" game made for it, stick to consoles. That is not, nor has it ever been, how PC gaming works. If you want to PC game, you buy a PC that can play said game. It's been like that since I built my very first "gaming" PC back in the 90's (and probably before then as well).

The reason I listed out the limitations is because they aren't completely correlated. Having a 32-bit OS by itself is a restriction, as is having low memory. Two restrictions, two points. 2GB of RAM on a 64-bit OS would have issues as well, which is why I specifically pointed out BOTH as being problems.

As for your Windows 2000/XP thing.. I'm well aware of when they were released. That was also the beginning of when 64-bit processors started to gain popularity. They had been making them since before then, but they didn't have a lot of buy-in yet from Microsoft for the OS itself (because of the complexity of compiling for both architectures). My point was more that CPUs have been 64-bit for a VERY long time, and Windows itself (other than XP) has been 64-bit. There is literally no excuse anymore for running a 32-bit OS other than ignorance, money, or the other requirements I listed before (like hardware, work, etc). If you have Windows 7 (which you do), there is NO reason to be running 32-bit version. You shouldn't have installed the 32-bit version ever. That's on you.

And yes.. making ANY demands of a developer is unreasonable. You aren't paying them. They don't work for you. They make the game that THEY want to make. If you can play it, awesome. If not, sucks to be you and I'm sorry. What right do you have to tell them how to make their game, or to DEMAND that it works on your crappy old PC? None. Just because they monetize it, does NOT mean you have any stake in their game, or can make ANY demands of them. Suggestions are one thing. Demands are something else. Believe me that it has been suggested that the game works on crappy PCs. You can reasonably assume what they've done with that suggestion.

I really don't have to prove my experience to you. I'm not looking for a job. If you find me unqualified to provide assistance to you, then you're free to ignore me... but I think you're being pretty ignorant yourself on your PC limitations and your expectations and demands for what GGG should do for you and that crappy PC.

If you want to get into PC gaming, then GET INTO PC GAMING. Don't expect to be able to continue playing every new game for the next 10 years on that ancient hardware and 32-bit OS. I guarantee that it won't be much longer until you won't be able to play ANYTHING new.

Look into the new Assassin's Creed: Unity lately? Guarantee you can't play it on that PC.
OMG those cpu temps Oo.

Almost near the TjMax. Bets you must suffer cpu throttling its speed and voltages down too.

C2D E6550 shouldn't max at 96c while you game, reseat your heatsink asap, something's wrong with the temps. 96C is 9 degree before hitting that TjMax. At this rate, next summer, any game you'll play will lead to computer shutdown minutes after starting them, any.

You should idle at 40c ish and about 55-60c when on load. Dunno if you have stock cooler or not but reseating it and reapplying thermal paste correctly should bring down those temps by 20-25C+++, which is huge.

And yeah, 32 bit os and 2 gb ram so weak nowaday.

Every single one of, happens to be a port from a console where the developers were too lazy to re-write things to work on PC architecture... And it mostly just runs the Xbox version with some things slapped on so it'll run in Windows/on an x86 CPU (for 360 games, which aren't those calling for even 4 GB!)

And pray tell me, besides Star Citizen, what 8GB games do you know of? Assassin's Creed: Unity is only 6. And while a number of games RECOMMEND 8, I can't find any others that REQUIRE more than 4.

I like how you imply that I've not been PC gaming since back when the USSR existed. Very nice of you to be condescending.

But if one has 2GB of memory, whether or not the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit makes absolutely zero difference, at least in a positive sense... And often, having a 64-bit OS for that much RAM will actually IMPEDE you, as it will require all stored memory adresses to be larger than 32 bits... And hence eat up more of that RAM.

While AMD had their first Athlon64 chips out in 2003 (YEARS after 2k/XP) Intel didn't get their 64-bit Pentiums (or even Xeons) out until 2004... Which still makes that only 10 years ago. Again, you're overstating things at best, and don't know what you're talking about at worst.

As for never installing the 32-bit version... Look up at what I said about 64-bit operating systems eating up more RAM than 32-bit ones: that is a proven and demonstrable difference that relates to performance. This is why, if you DON'T have over 3GB of RAM, Windows WILL automatically default to the 32-bit version when installing. The fact that you didn't know that speaks further volumes to how when it comes to your expertise, your reach exceeds your grasp.

You forget the part that no developer makes games out of the goodness of their own heart. They want to make a living at it, and hence, they want it to be a part of the market so that they can make money.

Also, I already HAVE paid them, (yes, that money you use to buy MTX points goes to them! Shocking, I know!) and I HAD planned on paying them more, and going for one of those Supporter packs, and "wear it on my sleeve" so to speak. But right now, with glitches (glitches, again, NOT lack of optimization) like this, I don't feel confident enough to warrant taking that step.

So if GGG wants to make sure that that largest reasonable number of people will turn in the most money, it's in their own best interests to have the most appealing product. Lowering the tech level would make things worse for those at one end, but no one (except possibly you?) would be complaining if they fixed their bugs, meaning it'd be a guaranteed boost to their net attractiveness.

Lastly, I never made a "demand." You're the one that somehow rephrased my distress and inquiry of information as a "demand" for action.

You actually are, or at least, are trying to assume a job: as an "expert" trying to "answer" a question posted, wherein instead you simply provide your own, (relatively uneducated) opinion. I've yet to see you actually bring up any fact that couldn't be gleaned from one of the FAQs or from searching Wikipedia for a couple seconds.

ACU just came out, and is one of the first top-shelf titles to completely ditch the 7th-gen consoles, so this isn't too much of a surprise.

I'd also note that graphically, it looks INFINITELY more impressive than this game ever will. So yeah, I'd expect it to call for more power. To try to say that this game is, technically, anywhere NEAR what that one is, would be a laughable statement.

However, this is an indie, pretty low-tech game, which means it doesn't actually have an excuse for an obscene tech "requirement."

As it is, I still meet the minimum requirements for the game, whether you like it or not. And in playing the game, I've encountered a situation guaranteed to occur, that makes the game unplayable as designed. This means that there's something WRONG, and it's with the GAME, not me. Sure, I can take undue effort on my part to specifically ACCOMMODATE this game in its present form, which would not just involve time, but money that would've gone elsewhere; in this case either my fund that would've gone to the whole-new machine planned further in the future, (which invariably would've been a more effective use of said funds) or to what would've otherwise been put towards giving money to GGG.

I don't think that, from that perspective, just about ANYONE would consider that route to be an ideal one. This goes for GGG themselves, too: since paying for a stopgap measure means that money can't go to them!

Yeah, when I ran that for this game I was quite alarmed, to be honest. No other game really pushes it that high, be it Crysis 1/2, (Modded) Skyrim, BioShock Infinite, SR4... Those cap at a bit around 70-75C. While yes, that's above what I'd wanted, (ditto with the idle of around 45-47C) was a bit of a shocking discovery. I'd have said more about it, but I wanted the thread to be about the original issue discussed; I have doubts that the two issues are DIRECTLY related. (indirectly, of course) And, given the results elsewhere in gaming, I'd largely guessed the results were simply due to the chip being one of the less-perfect turnouts.

I'll have to do further examination to see if it's throttling the CPU, on its clock rate and/or voltage.

As you might surmise, the thing DOES have Intel's reference cooler on it... While some might suggest getting a better one, again, I'd bring in the context... Buying another LGA-775-compatible cooler in almost the year 2015 really would be a bit of a waste of money. I suppose I can give it a try to apply a fresh layer of compound, but anything more would be taking money away from a future build, where I could have something distinctly NOT a C2D, and instead probably a Broadwell if they actually come out on time.
